Students Protest at Ramba Boys High School, Set School Building on Fire

Tension gripped Ramba Boys High School in Siaya County on Thursday evening after students staged a massive protest, demanding the immediate removal of their principal, Mr. Wycliffe Manoa.

The angry students accused the principal of poor leadership and mismanagement, saying they were tired of how the school was being run.

According to the students, their grievances had been ignored for too long, pushing them to take to the streets in protest.

The demonstration began around 6 p.m., with students burning down the school’s security house located near the main gate.

The situation quickly escalated as the students forced their way out of the school compound and marched toward a nearby market centre.

Footage captured by Newshub.co.ke showed the rowdy students carrying twigs and chanting the principal’s name as they paraded through the market.

Despite efforts by some teachers to restore calm, the students remained defiant, insisting that they would only return to school once the principal was transferred.

This latest protest comes just weeks after the school had been closed indefinitely due to a similar unrest.

The earlier incident, which happened on March 23 this year, followed the tragic deaths of two Form Four students. The learners had died after a septic tank at the school collapsed.

Reports indicated that over eight students had been standing on top of the tank when it suddenly gave way. The two who lost their lives were part of that group.

Their deaths triggered widespread anger and grief within the school community, prompting a violent protest that led to destruction of property and disrupted learning.

As a result of that incident, the principal was forced to send all students home, temporarily shutting down the school.

The Deputy County Commissioner of Rarieda confirmed the tragic event, stating that a rescue team had been quickly dispatched from Siaya town to help with recovery efforts.

The two bodies were retrieved with the assistance of local residents and taken to Bondo Hospital mortuary. The students who were injured during the collapse received treatment at nearby hospitals.

These back-to-back demonstrations paint a picture of ongoing unrest and dissatisfaction among students, raising serious questions about the management of the institution and the safety of learners within the school environment.
