Kenya Welcomes US Intervention in Rwanda-DRC Conflict

Kenya has praised the United States for stepping in to help resolve the ongoing tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The country’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Korir Sing’Oei, publicly thanked the US government on Saturday morning for its leadership role in facilitating a new peace agreement between the two nations.

Sing’Oei specifically lauded the administration of President Donald Trump for overseeing the signing of the peace deal, which took place in Washington, D.C., just a day earlier.

He described the agreement as a major step towards achieving lasting peace, security, and shared economic growth in the Great Lakes region.

“We applaud the United States government for demonstrating strong leadership in helping secure this milestone — a crucial foundation for peace, stability, and shared prosperity in Eastern DRC and the wider Great Lakes region,” PS Sing’Oei remarked.

He emphasized that Kenya had long advocated for dialogue as the best path to permanently restore friendly ties between Rwanda and the DRC, especially through the ongoing Luanda track process.

Sing’Oei also pointed out that the Trump administration’s efforts closely aligned with Kenya’s own diplomatic push to bring an end to the hostilities.

Kenya has actively supported direct negotiations between the DRC government and the M23 rebels, urging for a ceasefire under the Nairobi process framework.

“It is encouraging that this dialogue-based approach, now also being pursued in Doha, has a real chance of success,” he added. “Dialogue is the same method we strongly believe could resolve other conflicts, such as the ongoing fighting in Sudan.”

On Friday, April 25, Rwanda and the DRC formally signed an agreement pledging to respect each other’s sovereignty.

As part of the deal, both nations committed to preparing a detailed peace draft by May 2, 2025. The signing ceremony took place in Washington, D.C., with the presence of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who witnessed the historic moment.

Secretary Rubio welcomed the agreement, saying it set the stage for a new era of peace, stability, and prosperity across the region.

He also noted that the peace deal was critical in helping to protect America’s strategic interests, particularly in securing access to valuable minerals from the DRC.

The conflict between Rwanda and the DRC has had devastating effects over the years. The DRC has repeatedly accused Rwanda of backing the M23 rebel group by supplying them with weapons and troops, allegedly to destabilize the mineral-rich areas in eastern Congo.

This support for the rebels reportedly allowed them to capture large territories, forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee their homes in search of safety.

The newly signed agreement brings hope that a resolution is finally within reach, not only to end the suffering of displaced families but also to open opportunities for increased investment and development in both Rwanda and the DRC.
