Mumias East Member of Parliament, Peter Salasya, has officially announced his plans to run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

With this bold declaration, Salasya joins a growing list of leaders who have expressed interest in the country’s top job.

In a statement released on Monday morning, the young and vibrant MP said his decision came after deep reflection, extensive consultations, and listening carefully to the voices of many Kenyans.

“Fellow Kenyans, after thorough soul-searching, wide engagement with citizens across the country, and careful analysis of the current state of our nation, I, Peter Kalerwa Salasya, the Member of Parliament for Mumias East Constituency, hereby declare my candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the 2027 elections,” Salasya announced.

The lawmaker explained that his decision is driven by a deep desire to provide bold and transformative leadership that would drive Kenya toward industrial development, economic empowerment, and social justice.

He emphasized that Kenya has great potential and that it was time to end the culture of exporting labor and talent. Instead, he wants to focus on creating employment opportunities within the country.

Salasya strongly believes that Kenya can achieve industrialization, innovation, and manufacturing that will open up sustainable job opportunities and fully unlock the talents and abilities of its people.

As part of his presidential plan, Salasya also revealed that he will soon be unveiling a new political party to spearhead his movement.

The party, expected to be launched later this year, will focus on representing the dreams and ambitions of a new generation of Kenyans.

“This movement will represent a Kenya where opportunity is not reserved for a select few, but accessible to every Kenyan,” Salasya said.

He extended a passionate call to all Kenyans — especially the youth, women, workers, entrepreneurs, and visionaries — to walk with him on this journey toward building a more prosperous, inclusive, and united Kenya.

Salasya’s announcement comes at a time when the political race for the presidency is heating up. Several prominent figures, particularly from the opposition, have already indicated their ambitions.

Among them are Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Rigathi Gachagua, and Fred Matiang’i, all of whom have expressed interest in running for the top seat.

In a recent interview on Weru TV, Rigathi Gachagua confirmed that several opposition leaders, including himself, are planning to contest for the presidency.

However, he clarified that eventually, they would unite behind one flagbearer after internal negotiations.

Apart from the seasoned politicians, other notable names who have thrown their hats into the 2027 presidential race include Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah and former Chief Justice David Maraga.

With Salasya’s latest entry into the race, the competition for Kenya’s highest office is shaping up to be one of the most contested in the country’s history.
