IG Kanja Orders Immediate Reshuffle of Police After Deadly Protests in Trans Mara

Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has ordered the immediate transfer of senior police officers stationed in Ang’ata Barikoi, located in Trans Mara, Narok County.

This urgent decision comes in response to violent clashes on Monday that tragically led to the deaths of five protestors.

While addressing a security consultative meeting with local residents and leaders regarding the ongoing land dispute in the area, IG Kanja announced that the current officer in charge of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in the region would be transferred without delay.

He directed the DCI Director, Amin Mohamed Ibrahim, to immediately recall the officer to Nairobi headquarters and appoint a more capable replacement to serve the interests of the community.

“I have listened to the voices of the people here, and I understand your demand for a change in leadership,” Kanja stated. “Mr. Amin, the DCIO should be brought back to Nairobi for reassignment. Replace him with someone who is ready and willing to work hand in hand with the people.”

In addition to the DCIO’s transfer, IG Kanja also ordered the immediate removal of the General Service Unit (GSU) Commander from the region.

He emphasized that the commander should be redeployed elsewhere as part of a broader effort to de-escalate the ongoing tensions.

His announcement was met with cheers and applause from the gathered locals.

At the same time, Kanja confirmed that thorough investigations had begun into both the fatal shootings of the five residents and the reported police brutality during the protests.

He revealed that a specialized team of investigators from the DCI headquarters in Nairobi had already been deployed to Trans Mara to probe the incident.

“These investigations are already underway,” Kanja declared. “Our officers from Nairobi are here on the ground with you. They will uncover the truth behind what happened.

And let me be clear—whoever is found responsible, whether civilian or police officer, will face full accountability. Everyone will carry their own burden.”

The IG pleaded with the residents to remain calm and avoid further confrontations, urging them to cooperate with the authorities to help restore peace and stability in the area.

He also asked the locals to remove the barricades they had set up on roads to allow for the smooth movement of people, vehicles, and essential services.

Earlier in the day, Kanja faced a tense moment when he landed in the region. Due to a hostile reception, he was forced to stay inside his helicopter for more than an hour.

The residents insisted that local leaders, including Emurua Dikir MP Johana Ng’eno, be present before they would allow the meeting to proceed.

Despite the initial tension, the meeting eventually went on, and Kanja assured the community that the government was taking their concerns seriously and was determined to bring justice and peace to the troubled region.
