National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has officially ordered a parliamentary investigation into the alleged abduction and mistreatment of Juja MP George Koimburi, who was reportedly taken by unknown individuals under suspicious circumstances.
According to reports, MP Koimburi was seized on the afternoon of Sunday, May 25, shortly after attending a church service.
He was allegedly forced into a vehicle by unidentified individuals and driven to an undisclosed location. His whereabouts remained unknown for several hours, raising alarm among his family and colleagues.
Fortunately, on the morning of Monday, May 26, Koimburi was found abandoned at the Jacaranda Coffee Plantation, a property believed to be associated with businessman Jimmy Wanjigi.
The location is situated within the Kibichoi area of the Ruiru Coffee Farm in Kiambu County. This revelation contradicted earlier statements issued by the police.
Speaking during the National Assembly session on Tuesday, May 27, Speaker Wetang’ula confirmed the discovery and took the matter seriously, urging action.
“This morning, I have instructed the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security to work closely with the Inspector General of Police and other relevant security agencies.
They are to compile and present a preliminary report to this House on what happened,” he announced.
Wetang’ula also disclosed that Koimburi’s family had taken steps to restrict access to him while he recovers in hospital.
The facility, under the family’s instructions, is reportedly not allowing any visitors—including detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)—who had hoped to question Koimburi about the ordeal.
“The hospital has denied entry even to officers from the DCI, who are eager to establish the facts behind the incident,” Wetang’ula said, emphasizing the seriousness of the case.
He then directed members of the parliamentary Security Committee to personally visit Koimburi at the hospital and report back to the House on his health status and any developments.
In addition, Wetang’ula issued a strong warning to MPs and the general public, urging them to prioritize their personal security. “Please be vigilant at all times.
Be aware of your surroundings and cautious about the people you interact with, as this can help prevent such security threats,” he advised.
Adding to the disturbing nature of the incident, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa reported that Koimburi’s wife was also injured during the abduction.
She is said to have tried to stop the attackers from taking her husband, resulting in her sustaining injuries.
The family has since confirmed that Koimburi is currently undergoing medical treatment and is receiving care, while investigations into the incident continue under the oversight of police authorities.
This shocking event has sparked concerns among lawmakers and citizens alike, as it highlights the growing insecurity facing public officials and ordinary citizens in Kenya.
