Kenya Met Predicts Rains in Nairobi & 4 Other Regions for Next 5 Days

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a five-day weather forecast, predicting continued rainfall across various parts of the country, lasting through to Tuesday next week.

According to the forecast released on Friday, May 30, the weatherman indicated that regions in the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Central Rift Valley, and the Coast will experience moderate to heavy rainfall.

In particular, areas within the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley are set to receive significant downpours.

These areas include counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, and Narok.

Kenya Met explained that the rains in these counties will mainly begin in the afternoon and could be intense, often accompanied by thunderstorms.

The mornings are expected to have sunny breaks, although a few areas might still experience occasional showers.

“There will be a mix of sunny intervals in the morning and rainfall in the afternoon and nighttime, with thunderstorms likely in many areas,” the report noted.

While the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley will experience heavier rainfall, counties located in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley — including Nairobi — will receive moderate showers.

Other counties in the Highlands East region that will experience similar weather conditions are Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi.

In these areas, residents can expect cloudy mornings, which will clear to allow some sunshine, followed by light rainfall during the afternoon and nighttime hours.

Similar weather conditions have also been forecasted for the coastal counties. These include Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as parts of Tana River County.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, light morning rains are likely in these coastal areas.

In addition to rainfall forecasts, the department has issued an advisory for residents of the Highlands East region, including Nairobi, to prepare for extremely cold nights.

The counties that should brace for chilly conditions include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

Kenya Met has warned that temperatures during the night in these areas could drop significantly, ranging between 6°C and 8°C over the next five days starting Friday, May 30.

In contrast, regions within the Coast, Rift Valley, and Lake Victoria Basin are expected to experience very hot days.

Daytime temperatures in counties like Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Nandi may rise as high as 36°C.

The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to urge the public to remain alert and make necessary preparations based on their region’s specific weather forecast to ensure safety and minimize disruption.
