Four suspected Al-Shabaab militants were killed in Garissa County after Kenyan security forces used drone technology to track their movements. The operation was confirmed by the Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) Kenya in a statement released on Monday, June 2.

The militants were located in the Najo and Guracho regions of Garissa County. According to the CTP, a Special Operations Group (SOG) unit carried out the mission using advanced surveillance methods.

The SOG first identified the suspects through drone footage, and once their location was confirmed, the team launched a strategic operation.

When the suspects realized they were being tracked, they attempted to engage the officers, leading to a fierce gunfight. The confrontation ended with all four militants being killed.

Security teams recovered several weapons from the scene, including AK-47 rifles, a PKM machine gun, a large quantity of ammunition, and communication radios. CTP described the operation as a carefully planned, intelligence-led mission.

“This successful mission was the result of precise planning and timely intelligence. The drone surveillance allowed our officers to monitor the militants’ movements, leading to a well-executed strike by the SOG team.

The quick and effective response ensured the militants were neutralized before they could carry out any attacks,” the CTP said in their statement.

They also emphasized that security forces in the region will continue to maintain strong vigilance and intensify their operations against Al-Shabaab militants in order to keep Kenyans safe.

“This is another major win in our continued efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab operations. The SOG, in partnership with other national security units and local residents, remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all citizens,” the statement added.

This latest operation comes just weeks after another successful mission on May 8, when the same elite SOG unit thwarted an attempted attack involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the Dadaab-Hagadera road in Garissa County.

According to CTP, intelligence from local residents helped alert security teams that militants were attempting to plant IEDs targeting both civilians and security patrol vehicles. The SOG team responded swiftly to the threat.

In that incident, one militant was killed and three others were wounded in a gun battle. Additionally, one suspect was captured alive. The officers recovered a cache of weapons from the scene, including an AK-47 rifle, a PKM machine gun, a pistol, a communication radio, and a remote control device used for IEDs.

“On the morning of May 8, our elite Special Operations Group neutralized an Al-Shabaab member while acting on a tip-off from local residents. The militants were trying to plant IEDs along the Dadaab-Hagadera road, targeting both civilians and police vehicles,” the CTP stated.

Authorities praised the local community for its continued cooperation, noting that such partnerships are essential in the ongoing battle against terrorism in the region. The SOG remains firm in its mission to eliminate all threats posed by Al-Shabaab and other terror groups.
