Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja was recently seen wearing a distinctive lapel button on his official police uniform, sparking curiosity among observers.
This small but symbolic accessory is white, featuring the flag of Africa at the center, with the word “AFRIPOL” printed beneath it. It was the first time the IG was publicly seen with this particular button, prompting questions about its significance.
In an exclusive statement to Newshub.co.ke, Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga explained that the lapel button is not just a decorative item—it is an official symbol worn by the President of the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation, commonly known as AFRIPOL.
Inspector General Kanja currently serves as the President of AFRIPOL, a continental institution under the African Union (AU).
The organization was created to promote coordination and collaboration among police services in African countries, with the aim of tackling serious crimes that cross borders, such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, cybercrime, and other forms of organized crime.
According to Nyaga, as long as Kanja holds this prestigious position, he is required to wear the AFRIPOL lapel button as part of his official attire.
Kanja was officially confirmed as the Inspector General of Police on September 19, 2024. Following this appointment, in October 2024, he was selected to serve as President of AFRIPOL.
This marked a significant milestone for both Kanja and the country, as the role involves steering high-level discussions and decisions related to continental security cooperation.
AFRIPOL is governed by a General Assembly, which is its highest decision-making body. The assembly is composed of police chiefs from all 55 African Union member states.
There is also an Executive Board responsible for monitoring operations and ensuring that agreed policies are put into practice. In addition, AFRIPOL’s Secretariat, led by an Executive Director, is based in Algiers, Algeria, and handles the organization’s daily functions.
One of Kanja’s first official duties as AFRIPOL President was to chair the 12th Steering Committee Meeting, which took place at the AFRIPOL headquarters in Algiers from October 29 to October 30, 2024.
This marked his entry into a leadership role that directly influences the future of security cooperation across Africa.
Just a month later, on November 28, 2024, Kanja presided over an Extraordinary General Assembly session. This high-level meeting brought together top police officials and security experts from across the continent to focus on reforming AFRIPOL’s structure and operations.
The goal was to boost the organization’s ability to fight transnational crime and cybercrime more effectively and in a unified manner.
As President of the AFRIPOL General Assembly, Kanja is now at the forefront of efforts to direct the strategic priorities of the body. He plays a key role in ensuring strong collaboration among African countries, building a more secure and stable continent by addressing complex crime challenges that affect multiple nations.
Speaking to Newshub.co.ke, Nyaga clarified that Kanja took over this continental leadership role from his predecessor, former Inspector General Japhet Koome.
Kanja’s term as AFRIPOL President is scheduled to run for two years, concluding in October 2026. The position is non-renewable.
If, for any reason, Kanja were to vacate his role as Kenya’s Inspector General of Police before the end of the AFRIPOL term, the new IG appointed to replace him would also assume Kenya’s leadership seat at AFRIPOL, as the role is tied to the country’s top police official.
