Nairobi County Launches Crackdown on People Urinating in Public Places Within CBD

The Nairobi County government has launched a major campaign aimed at transforming the Central Business District (CBD) into a cleaner, safer, and more hygienic environment for all.

This bold move, spearheaded by the county’s Department of Environment, seeks to end the widespread problem of public urination and other forms of environmental pollution that continue to affect the city’s image.

Speaking on Wednesday, June 4, Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, said the county is intensifying its efforts to arrest individuals caught urinating or defecating in public places across the CBD.

The crackdown forms part of a broader mission to promote better sanitation, improve public health, and restore order in the city.

According to Mosiria, the county has now enhanced its nighttime operations to address these pressing environmental concerns.

He revealed that during a recent overnight operation, he personally led a cleanup and enforcement exercise targeting illegal waste disposal and public urination. The operation resulted in the arrest of several offenders who were found violating county regulations related to sanitation and cleanliness.

“These operations are not just about cleaning up waste; they are about instilling discipline and encouraging responsible behavior among residents and visitors,” Mosiria told TUKO.co.ke. “We are stepping up enforcement to ensure that Nairobi’s CBD remains clean, safe, and respectable for everyone who lives, works, or visits here.”

He stressed that these crackdowns would not be a one-time affair, but a continuous daily effort. The Nairobi County Government is committed to maintaining a high level of cleanliness and protecting the dignity of the city and its people.

“A clean environment is not a luxury — it is a right. It reflects the value and respect we hold for every person who calls Nairobi home,” Mosiria added.

As part of this ongoing initiative, several people were recently arrested after being found urinating in public areas within the CBD.

These arrests are being used to send a strong message that such behavior will no longer be tolerated. The county is determined to enforce environmental laws more strictly and make examples of those who break them.

“We’ve reached a point where people are urinating all over the city without shame. That must stop. Today, we arrested all individuals found doing so, and they will be taken to court,” Mosiria emphasized.

“We are actively working to discourage this behavior and prevent any further acts of public urination in the city.”

Through these efforts, the county hopes to encourage a culture of cleanliness and civic responsibility, making Nairobi a model city in terms of hygiene and environmental care.
