Kenya Nominates DCI Chief Mohamed Amin for INTERPOL Leadership Role

Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, has officially nominated the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin, as the country’s candidate for a seat on the INTERPOL Executive Committee. If elected, Amin will represent the African continent within the global police body.

This nomination is part of Kenya’s broader effort to strengthen Africa’s voice and influence in international security matters.

The elections will take place during the 93rd INTERPOL General Assembly, which will be held in Marrakech, Morocco, from November 24 to 27.

While addressing delegates on Friday at the 11th Council of Ministers meeting of the Regional Centre on Small Arms and Light Weapons (RECSA) in Nairobi, CS Murkomen urged member states to support Amin’s candidacy.

He described the nomination as not only a proud moment for Kenya but also a significant chance for Africa to contribute meaningfully to global law enforcement decisions.

“Kenya’s victory in this election would open the door for Africa to share its security concerns and priorities at the highest levels of international policing,” Murkomen stated.

He emphasized that the presence of an African representative in the INTERPOL Executive Committee would help ensure that the continent’s unique security challenges receive global attention and action.

The INTERPOL Executive Committee acts as the organization’s leadership team, tasked with supervising how decisions from the General Assembly are implemented and managing the operations of the General Secretariat.

Some of its major roles include guiding INTERPOL’s activities, monitoring the Secretary General, shaping meeting agendas, and strengthening international police cooperation.

Members of the committee also serve as regional representatives, giving them a vital platform to voice the concerns and goals of their respective continents.

Should Mohamed Amin secure the position, he will be responsible for highlighting key African security issues on the world stage, including the fight against cross-border crimes, terrorism, human trafficking, and corruption.

His job would also involve engaging closely with police agencies across African countries, advocating for training and resource support, and promoting regional collaboration to enhance the continent’s ability to combat organized crime effectively.

Amin brings with him a wealth of experience, having spent over three decades in law enforcement. He has led numerous complex criminal investigations, worked on anti-terrorism initiatives, and participated in international criminal justice proceedings, including testifying at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

His academic background includes a Master’s degree in Criminology, and he has been honored with several prestigious state awards, such as the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS), Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS), and the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW).

In his current role as DCI Director, Amin also oversees INTERPOL’s regional office for Eastern Africa. He has been a driving force behind reforming Kenya’s investigative branch by promoting professionalism, ethical conduct, modernization, and better sharing of intelligence.

He is widely recognized for his integrity, effective leadership, and dedication to community-based policing strategies.

Amin’s nomination not only reflects his personal achievements but also highlights Kenya’s determination to play a leading role in shaping international policing policies through African representation.
