Thousands of Youth Get Government Jobs as Interns and Military Officers Promoted

In a major development aimed at empowering the youth, the government has announced the deployment of more than 6,000 healthcare interns to various medical facilities across the country under the Ministry of Health.

These interns will serve for one year under a well-organized and closely monitored internship programme for the 2025/2026 period.

The news was made public on Friday, June 27, by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, who confirmed the official posting of the interns. The ministry has fulfilled its promise to ensure all qualified interns are deployed by July 1, 2025.

“In line with the Ministry’s goal to provide timely internship opportunities, we are pleased to confirm the official posting of 6,484 healthcare interns under the 2025/2026 Internship Cohort,” read part of the ministry’s official statement.

The breakdown of the 6,484 posted interns includes 1,147 medical officer interns and 87 dental interns. In addition, 500 interns have been placed in pharmacy roles, while 659 individuals have been assigned to positions as Bachelor of Science (BSc) Clinical Officers.

This mass posting is part of a wider effort by the government to provide professional growth opportunities for young graduates in the health sector.

Meanwhile, in the security sector, President William Ruto has approved a series of military promotions, postings, and appointments within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) following recommendations from the Defence Council.

The Council, chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, advised on various leadership adjustments across the Army, Air Force, and Navy.

In the Kenya Army, several senior officers were elevated to higher ranks. Brigadier Faustino Mancha Lobaly has been promoted to Major General and now serves as the Director of the National Defence Security Industries.

Brigadier Charles Lenjo Mwazighe was also promoted to Major General and is now the Director of the International Peace Support Centre.

Other key promotions include Brigadier Mohamed Isak Iddi, who now holds the rank of Major General and serves as Director of Oversight, Compliance, and Accountability (DOCA).

Brigadier Edward Rugendo also rose to the rank of Major General and is now the Director of Personnel and Logistics.

Brigadier Richard Wambua Mwanzia has been elevated to Major General and will serve as Senior Directing Staff for the Army at the National Defence College.

In addition, Colonel Said Mohamed Mwacharo has been promoted to Brigadier and will now serve as the Chief of Infrastructure. Colonel Meshack Sinkira Kishoyian was also promoted to Brigadier and appointed Commander of the 6 Brigade.

The Kenya Air Force also saw changes. Colonel Victor Waithaka Kang’ethe was promoted to Brigadier and named the Director of the National Air Support Department (NASD).

Another promotion was granted to Colonel Rodah Mkavita Mwasigwa, who is now Brigadier and serves as the Chief of Compensation and Welfare at Defence Headquarters.

In the Kenya Navy, Brigadier Timothy Stelu Lekolool was promoted to Major General and appointed Senior Directing Staff at the National Defence College. Colonel Ronald Mesa Makori rose to Brigadier and now heads Strategic Plans and Policy.

Additionally, Colonel Peter Musili Muthungu was promoted to Brigadier and will serve as Head of Production at Kenya Shipyard Limited. Lieutenant Colonel Wilfrida Atieno Omolo was promoted to Colonel and will serve as the Commander of Kenya Navy Logistics.

The final promotion in this wave was Lieutenant Colonel Safari Katana Kalume, who has now become a Colonel and been appointed Senior Directing Staff at the Navy Joint Warfare Centre.

This combined effort by the Health Ministry and Defence Council not only strengthens national capacity in healthcare and security but also opens up significant employment opportunities for the youth, marking a major step in the government’s push to empower and involve more young Kenyans in nation-building.
