Breaking: Senior Police Officer Dies

Senior Police Officer Among Two Killed in Narok–Mai Mahiu Road Crash

A tragic road accident on Saturday evening claimed the lives of two people, including a senior police officer, near the Maduro area along the Narok–Mai Mahiu highway.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened when a long-distance trailer lost control and slammed into two private vehicles—a Toyota Prado TX and a Toyota G-Touring.

Witnesses at the scene said the trailer’s brakes appeared to have failed, causing it to veer dangerously and smash into the oncoming vehicles on the busy road.

Several people sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals by first responders. Among the groups that responded quickly was Sikika Road Safety, an advocacy group focused on promoting road safety and assisting accident victims. They were among the first to alert emergency teams about the serious crash.

One of the cars hit head-on was a Toyota Prado driven by Chief Inspector George Rotich Kipchumba, a highly respected officer from the Narok Traffic Base.

The crash occurred in a remote area, and locals expressed concern over the slow response by emergency services due to the distance from the nearest rescue centers and the fact that the accident took place late in the evening.

The collision caused a major traffic jam, with many motorists forced to stop and help ferry the injured to health facilities. The stretch between Narok and Nairobi has become increasingly dangerous, with several deadly accidents reported over the years.

Photos and videos shared with Newshub.co.ke revealed the severity of the crash. The Prado involved in the accident was heavily damaged and pushed off the main lane, with the passenger side completely destroyed by the impact.

After calls for help flooded social media, Sikika confirmed that the Narok County Government eventually dispatched emergency services to the crash site.

This area of the Narok–Mai Mahiu highway is well-known for being a high-risk zone, especially at night and during rainy seasons. In fact, this is not the first major accident reported along the same stretch.

On December 23 last year, eight people lost their lives in two separate crashes near Duka Moja, at the SGR Section 5 of the Narok–Mai Mahiu road. These incidents involved six vehicles and a motorcycle, as confirmed in a police report.

The first of those December crashes occurred when a trailer heading to Mai Mahiu had a tyre burst. The trailer veered out of control and collided with a Toyota Premio, a matatu, and a bus. Tragically, three passengers inside the matatu died on the spot.

Just minutes after the first crash, another speeding trailer approached the scene and slammed into a Prado, instantly killing two people on board, while a third passenger passed away later at the hospital. The second trailer also hit a motorcycle, leading to the deaths of two passengers who were riding pillion.

All the victims—both dead and injured—were taken to the Narok County Referral Hospital for treatment and further identification.

The continued accidents along this stretch have raised fresh concerns about road safety, trailer maintenance, and emergency response efforts in rural areas.

Calls are now growing for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and more frequent inspections of heavy-duty vehicles plying this dangerous highway.
