Gachagua Allies Face Terrorism Charges Over Kikuyu Court Arson

Two close allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are now facing serious terrorism charges brought by the government.

The two individuals, identified as Peter Kinyanjui Kawanjiru and Serah Wanjiku Thiga, are accused of being involved in setting fire to the Kikuyu Law Courts in Kiambu County.

According to an official charge sheet obtained by Newshub.co.ke, the charges were presented in court by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and approved by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

The prosecution alleges that the accused not only targeted the Kikuyu Law Courts but also caused significant destruction to other nearby government facilities.

The charge sheet states: “On June 25, 2025, between 12:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., in the Kikuyu area within Kiambu County, you and others before this court committed a terrorist act which led to severe destruction of government offices and buildings.”

It further outlines the extensive damage caused, including destruction to the Kikuyu Probation Offices, Kikuyu Law Courts, Sub-County Commissioner’s Office, Kikuyu Chief’s Office, Registrar of Persons’ Office, Sub-County Education Office, Sub-County Accountant’s Office, Registrar of Lands Office, Dagoretti Police Post, and other government properties.

Kawanjiru, who is known as the Youth Leader for the Democratic Change Party (DCP), was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on the night of July 1.

His family reported that the officers, dressed in plain clothes, stormed their home in Limuru at around 8:30 p.m. They allegedly broke into the house, damaged doors, turned everything upside down, and forcefully took him away in front of his shocked family members.

Eyewitnesses and relatives described the scene as terrifying. Over ten vehicles reportedly surrounded the home, and shortly after, a sudden power blackout hit the area.

This was followed by the sound of loud bangs, gunshots, and confusion as the officers carried out the arrest.

Kawanjiru was brought before the court four days later. Although the court granted him bond, what followed outside the Ruiru Law Courts in Kiambu County shocked many. Just moments after securing his release, anti-terror police officers re-arrested him in a dramatic scene.

Video footage obtained by Newshub.co.ke captured the moment armed officers violently grabbed Kawanjiru and forced him into a moving van. Gunshots were fired as police dispersed supporters and family members who were protesting the rearrest.

Despite the loud cries and desperate attempts by relatives and party supporters to stop the re-arrest, the officers overpowered them and whisked Kawanjiru away. The chaotic scene left many stunned and raised fresh concerns about the conduct of law enforcement in such sensitive cases.

This case has stirred political tension and raised questions about the targeting of individuals associated with opposition figures.

As the legal process continues, both Kawanjiru and Thiga remain at the center of a high-profile case that could have far-reaching political and legal implications.
