Violence broke out during the Saba Saba Day protests on Monday, July 7, leaving at least one person injured in Mukuru kwa Njenga, Nairobi County. The situation turned chaotic when the man was shot, reportedly by a rubber bullet, which struck one of his limbs.
Witnesses said the impact of the bullet left the victim unable to walk. He was quickly helped by those nearby and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received emergency medical care.
However, it still remains unclear whether the man was actively participating in the protests or just caught in the chaos.
Elsewhere in the country, demonstrations have continued to spread. In Kitengela, located in Kajiado County, another person was also reportedly injured as protest tensions escalated.
The nationwide unrest reflects growing frustration among citizens, as people across different counties join in demanding change during the annual Saba Saba commemorations.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of injuries or provide detailed statements regarding the incidents.
Meanwhile, human rights groups have urged the police to exercise restraint and protect civilians’ rights during the ongoing demonstrations.
