Chaos as Machete-Wielding Goons Storm Church Event, Target Politician

Chaos Erupts as Machete-Wielding Goons Disrupt Church Event, Target Local Politician in Migori

Panic broke out during a church event in Nyatike, Migori County, after a group of goons armed with crude weapons stormed the gathering and went after a local politician.

The dramatic incident happened at Kabobo in Macalder Kanyarwanda Ward, where a large crowd had gathered for an interdenominational prayer service and fundraiser. Witnesses say the armed men had concealed machetes in their clothes and blended in with the attendees before suddenly attempting to cause chaos.

Footage seen by Newshub.co.ke captured the shocking moment worshippers scattered in fear, with many running to one side of the venue as the group targeted a politician who has not yet been publicly identified.

Surprisingly, the violent scene unfolded right in front of top government officials, including Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko, and Farouk Kibet, a close aide to President William Ruto. Despite their presence, the situation still escalated.

Although the exact reason for the scuffle has not been officially confirmed, multiple sources have linked the incident to political tensions involving Kanyarwanda Ward MCA Felix Okwanyo. His attendance at the event is believed to have triggered the confrontation.

A local source who spoke to Newshub.co.ke revealed that there were already signs of tension before the fundraiser began. The source explained that Okwanyo, known for strongly opposing the current Migori County leadership, has not been on good terms with the area MP and several MCAs.

“He (Okwanyo) has been vocal against both the governor and the local MP. Word on the ground is that he’s eyeing a higher seat in 2027. He’s also been critical of the gold mining committee, especially since his ward is among the leading gold-producing areas in Migori,” the source said.

“He’s made a lot of enemies politically. So it’s difficult to know who exactly would organize an attack like this against him during such a public function.”

At the time of publishing, no Migori leaders had released an official statement addressing the incident.

The practice of using hired goons to settle political scores has become alarmingly common in Kenya. The Migori chaos comes just months after another violent event linked to politics. In that case, a gathering connected to Cooperatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya’s partner was thrown into turmoil when machete-wielding youths disrupted the meeting.

In a more recent case, reports emerged that armed goons invaded the offices of the Kenya Human Rights Commission shortly before a press briefing was scheduled. The event had been organized by a group of Kenyan mothers ahead of the Saba Saba Day protests.

The mothers were planning to speak out against the increasing cases of enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and extrajudicial killings targeting young people who have participated in recent street protests.

These disturbing events highlight a growing trend where violence is being used to silence political opposition and civil voices, raising serious concerns about the safety of both leaders and ordinary citizens in Kenya’s evolving political environment.
