Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed deep sorrow following the death of popular comedian KK Mwenyewe, whose real name was Zachariah Kariuki. KK became well known across the country for his humorous impersonations of Gachagua, which earned him both national fame and a large online following.

In a heartfelt statement released on Tuesday, July 15, Gachagua, who is currently on a two-month visit to the United States, praised the young comedian for his outstanding contribution to Kenya’s comedy scene.

He described Kariuki as “a content creator par excellence” and applauded him for using his talents to communicate meaningful and relatable messages through comedy.

“I woke up this morning to the heartbreaking news of the passing of Mr. Zachariah Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe. He was an exceptionally talented content creator who inspired many people across our nation,” Gachagua said in the statement.

He went on to commend KK for his dedication, resilience, and creativity. “Mr. KK was a consistent and hardworking young man who used humour as a tool to engage and uplift Kenyans. His unique style and simplicity in delivering jokes allowed him to connect with people from all walks of life,” the former Deputy President added.

KK Mwenyewe gained widespread recognition through his viral skits that mimicked Gachagua’s speech and mannerisms.

Many Kenyans were amazed by how accurately he portrayed the former Deputy President, often using exaggerated features such as an oversized suit and artificial potbelly to perfect his performance.

He died on Monday night, July 14, at the Kiambu Level 5 Hospital after a brief illness. The news of his death was confirmed by fellow comedian and close collaborator Kafengo, who described his passing as a great loss to the comedy world.

Over time, Kariuki’s clever and deadpan style of humour won the hearts of many, and he became a household name among online content creators in Kenya. His content was not only funny but also thought-provoking, often addressing real-life situations in a way that was easy for many people to relate to.

By the time of his death, KK had amassed a strong fan base with over 1.1 million followers on TikTok and more than 412,000 followers on Facebook. His final skit, posted on July 4, continued to entertain fans with his signature witty style.

KK, who was a student at Kisii University, rose to fame in 2022 after releasing a hilarious video where he acted out Gachagua’s emotional reaction to the 2022 general election results. His spot-on impersonation quickly went viral and opened doors for him in the entertainment industry.

Thanks to his growing popularity, he was featured in numerous media interviews and gradually expanded his content to include impressions of other public figures. His influence and reach continued to grow, making him one of the most recognizable faces in Kenya’s comedy scene.

At one point, KK revealed that he was facing financial struggles in school, and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stepped in to clear his school fee balance—a gesture that further boosted the young comedian’s morale and public profile.

The news of his untimely death has shocked fans and fellow comedians alike, with many taking to social media to mourn the loss of a young talent whose career was just beginning to blossom. His unique voice, humour, and creativity will be dearly missed.
