‘Mood’ Matatu Returns to Garage After Suffering Damage During Launch

George Ruto, son of President William Ruto, has taken his highly publicized matatu named Mood back to the garage for repairs after it sustained damage during its grand launch at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) over the weekend.

The matatu, which gained massive attention for its flashy appearance and top-of-the-line features — including eco-friendly solar panels — was reportedly damaged due to the overwhelming excitement of the crowd at the event.

The large turnout and overenthusiastic fans led to chaos, causing unintentional harm to the vehicle.

Confirmation of the damage was posted on social media through an account linked to Mood. On Monday, the page shared a teaser video showing the matatu at a garage undergoing repairs.

The caption read, “Mood is currently out for touch-ups. We will be back shortly,” which immediately stirred questions among fans.

One concerned follower asked, “What happened? Why is it already back in the garage?” The response from the account explained that the damage occurred as a result of the excitement and disorder that erupted during the launch.

According to the matatu’s team, Mood wasn’t the only vehicle affected at the event. They revealed that several other matatus also experienced damage and are undergoing similar repairs. “Most of the matatus were destroyed to an extent, and they are equally undergoing touch-ups.

It stemmed from the excitement… what if you could see the solar panels?” they added, highlighting that the solar panels on Mood, one of its major highlights, were among the most damaged components.

Luxury Features and Innovations

Mood is not just an ordinary matatu. It boasts luxury features that have never been seen before in Kenya’s public transport sector.

The vehicle is fitted with a 65-inch flat-screen television, a live DJ booth for on-the-road entertainment, solar panels to power electronics, and premium bucket seats imported directly from China.

This is the first matatu in Kenya to be designed with bucket seats arranged in a 25-seater layout, prioritizing comfort and a luxurious experience.

This unique setup reduces the usual 32-seater format and adopts a 2-by-1 seating arrangement to ensure passengers have more space and enjoy a better ride.

The addition of a DJ booth is meant to offer a club-like atmosphere during commutes or while hosting special events on board, making Mood a standout attraction in Nairobi’s matatu industry.

Massive Turnout and City Disruption

During the official launch, hundreds of young Kenyans gathered at the KICC to support George Ruto and join in celebrating matatu culture. The event attracted a lively crowd, many of whom were drawn by the promise of music, innovation, and a glimpse into the future of urban transport.

After the event ended, the matatu made a brief but attention-grabbing ride through the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD). The movement of Mood, along with its large crowd of supporters, caused significant traffic jams in the city centre that stretched for several hours into the night.

The unexpected disruption triggered anxiety among Nairobi residents trying to get home. Reports soon emerged warning the public to remain cautious due to the presence of rowdy individuals and potential goons mingling with the crowd.

Despite the unfortunate damage, Mood remains a symbol of creativity and innovation in Kenya’s public transport space. Once the repairs are complete, the team behind the matatu has promised to bring it back to the streets — bigger, better, and even more exciting.
