President Ruto Donates Ksh1 Million to Support Comedian KK Mwenyewe’s Funeral

President William Ruto has stepped forward to support the funeral arrangements of popular Kenyan comedian Zakaria Kariuki, better known by his stage name KK Mwenyewe, by donating Ksh1 million.

This was confirmed by senior State House digital strategist Dennis Itumbi, who shared the update through his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

According to Itumbi, President Ruto’s generous contribution was part of a collective effort by various leaders to help give the comedian a dignified send-off.

Itumbi also mentioned that Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika donated Ksh200,000, while Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and Lari MP Mburu Kahangara each contributed to the funeral fund as well.

“Thank you, Mr. President, for your heartfelt donation of Ksh1 million to assist with KK Mwenyewe’s funeral expenses. Much appreciation to Governor Susan Kihika for her Ksh200,000, and gratitude also goes to MPs Kimani Ichung’wah and Mburu Kahangara for their support,” Itumbi wrote.

He made these remarks during a candle-lighting ceremony held on the evening of Monday, July 21, where members of the content creation community came together to honour and remember KK Mwenyewe’s life and legacy.

“KK, go and make heaven laugh even more than you did here on earth. We lit a candle with the creator’s community to celebrate the light you brought into our lives,” Itumbi added emotionally.

He also raised an important issue about digital content ownership, saying, “One big question still remains—what happens to monetization after a creator’s death? We need a system that allows earnings to be passed on to a next of kin. We will advocate for this.”

Zakaria Kariuki, fondly known for his viral impersonations of top government officials, passed away on Sunday evening, July 14, at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital after a brief illness. His death was confirmed by fellow comedian Kafengo through a heartfelt Facebook post.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden death of Zakaria Kariuki, also known as KK Mwenyewe. He passed away while receiving treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital. During this difficult time, we ask for prayers and support for his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace,” Kafengo wrote.

KK Mwenyewe was a beloved content creator whose talent in imitating former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua captured the hearts of many Kenyans. He had built a strong online presence, boasting over 1.1 million followers on TikTok and more than 412,000 followers on Facebook.

In a condolence message sent from the United States, where he is currently on a two-month official visit, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua mourned the young comedian, praising his creativity and contribution to Kenya’s comedy industry.

“I woke up this morning to the heartbreaking news of the death of Mr. Zakaria Kariuki, also known as KK Mwenyewe — a gifted content creator and a great inspiration to many,” Gachagua stated.

“KK was a young, persistent, and innovative comedian who used his talent to craft simple, yet powerful messages that resonated with Kenyans of all backgrounds,” he added.

Kariuki’s unexpected death has left a deep void in the Kenyan entertainment scene, and tributes continue to pour in from fans, leaders, and fellow creators who admired his humor, energy, and passion for comedy.
