Juja MP George Koimburi Faces Charges Over Faking Own Kidnapping to Dodge Arrest

Juja Member of Parliament, George Koimburi, is in legal trouble after being accused of faking his own abduction in a bid to dodge arrest and avoid prosecution over alleged land fraud.

Koimburi appeared before the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, July 23, where he was officially charged with several serious offenses, including conspiracy to obstruct justice and spreading false information to mislead the public.

Fake Video and Karen Hospital Appearance

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) pointed out that the charge of publishing false information was based on a video Koimburi shared on June 7, filmed from Karen Hospital. In the clip, the MP claimed he had been kidnapped and tortured, sparking public concern and sympathy.

However, investigators concluded that there was no real abduction. According to the prosecution, the supposed kidnapping on May 25, 2025, in Mugutha area, Juja Sub-county (Kiambu County), was a staged event carefully planned to make Koimburi look like a victim and divert attention from the land fraud case he was facing.

Court Proceedings and Bail Terms

Appearing before Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi, Koimburi pleaded not guilty to all charges. The court later released him on cash bail of Ksh300,000, and listed three individuals as his contact persons. His case is scheduled to be mentioned again in court on August 5.

Ties to Rigathi Gachagua

The matter gained national attention not just because of its dramatic nature, but also due to Koimburi’s close alliance with former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party Leader, Rigathi Gachagua. On Monday, May 26, Gachagua even visited Koimburi in hospital—seemingly unaware that the entire incident was allegedly faked.

Investigations Reveal the Truth

Shortly after news of the supposed abduction went viral, law enforcement agencies launched a full investigation. On Wednesday, May 28, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, along with senior officials including DCI Director Amin Mohammed, addressed the press with a detailed account of their findings.

They revealed that three individuals had been arrested, including the Juja Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Chairperson, who allegedly worked closely with Koimburi to stage the fake kidnapping.

DCI: “It Was All a Well-Orchestrated Plot”

DCI Director Amin Mohammed expressed disbelief at the lengths the MP went to, calling it an unbelievable act of deception.

“It is quite shocking for an elected Member of Parliament to go so far as to fake his own abduction, stirring fear and confusion among citizens. Thankfully, our investigation exposed the truth—Koimburi was never kidnapped,” said Amin.

According to police, suspect statements and tracking evidence painted a clear picture: Koimburi planned the entire incident to win public sympathy and to distract from his upcoming court date, where he was expected to face four separate land fraud charges.

What Happens Next?

With the case set for mention on August 5, all eyes remain on the unfolding legal battle. The situation has sparked a nationwide conversation on political accountability, abuse of public sympathy, and the extent to which some leaders will go to avoid facing justice.

Koimburi’s legal team insists on his innocence, but with mounting evidence and public interest, the outcome of this case could have major political and legal implications for both the MP and those connected to him.
