Lawyer-turned-activist Morara Kebaso has announced that he will refund all Kenyans who contributed money during his campaign fundraising drive.
In a statement shared on his social media on Friday, July 25, Kebaso explained that the refund offer is meant for individuals who felt their donations were misunderstood as an endorsement of his political ambitions.
He urged anyone seeking a refund to respond directly to his post by sharing their M-Pesa transaction message or retrieving their M-Pesa statement to provide the transaction reference code. Once verified, Kebaso assured that he would reimburse the exact amount sent.
“If you feel you contributed to my fundraising thinking it was politically motivated, please respond below with the M-Pesa message or reference code. I will refund you in full,” Kebaso said in his post.
He clarified that although many may have believed their support was fueling a political campaign, that was never his intention.
Kebaso further expressed his distress over being wrongly accused of deceiving people or being labeled a beggar, emphasizing that such allegations were tarnishing his name, especially after stepping away from politics.
“I’ve been living with the pain of being treated like a thief. I don’t want to carry this weight into my future,” he explained. “If refunding makes me appear childish, then so be it—call me ‘Morara, the baby boy.’ I just want to lighten my load and move on peacefully.”
Back on September 4, 2024, Kebaso had made a public appeal requesting Ksh 1.2 million to help purchase a public address system and other tools necessary for his campaign activities.
Shortly after receiving overwhelming public support, he confirmed that he had successfully acquired what he described as a “super clear presidential address system” to use during his nationwide engagements.
Due to the high volume of donations, his M-Pesa account reached its limit of Ksh 500,000, forcing him to ask well-wishers to temporarily stop sending money while he arranged for alternative methods.
“Good evening. I sincerely thank each one of you for your generosity towards our cause. My M-Pesa account is currently full, and I’ve hit the transaction ceiling. Kindly hold off on sending more funds until I provide another option,” he had told his followers at the time.
Kebaso’s move to refund contributors has sparked widespread attention, with many praising his transparency, while others continue to express mixed feelings about the entire episode.
