Government Gives Progress Report on Diani Airport Expansion in Kwale

The government has given an encouraging update on the ongoing expansion of Diani Airport in Kwale County, stating that the project is nearing completion. This development is seen as a major milestone in efforts to boost the economic potential of Kenya’s coastal region, particularly through tourism and trade.

Speaking to the public on Tuesday morning, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo confirmed that the construction of a new aircraft parking area, known as an apron, is already 90% complete. This new space will play a vital role in enhancing how planes are parked, loaded, and moved within the airport.

Omollo also mentioned that the taxiway—an essential road connecting the runway to the parking areas—is currently under construction, and the final section is expected to be finished within the next two weeks.

Once completed, this new infrastructure will greatly improve how efficiently the airport manages both local and regional air traffic.

“These upgrades will make the airport much more efficient in handling aircraft and passengers, leading to smoother operations and faster turnaround times,” PS Omollo explained.

He also highlighted that work on the drainage system—important for the airport’s safety and sustainability—is progressing well and will also be completed soon.

The airport’s runway, which was extended by 400 meters in the previous year, is now fully operational. It can now accommodate larger planes that carry more passengers, helping the airport support a higher number of tourists and travelers.

Omollo emphasized that the expansion has elevated Diani into an important aviation hub that now connects to popular tourist destinations such as Amboseli and the Maasai Mara through regular flights.

“This project is transforming the South Coast. It’s reducing travel time, improving connectivity, and giving a huge boost to our tourism and trade industries,” he said.

“For the people of Kwale and beyond, this means more job opportunities, better business prospects, and greater access to both local and international markets.”

The airport expansion began in October last year with the aim of turning Diani into a central gateway for both tourism and commercial activities.

Given Kwale County’s breathtaking beaches and rich cultural background, better airport facilities are expected to attract even more visitors and investors to the region.

Previously, Diani Airport could only accommodate a maximum of three aircraft at any one time, which made it difficult for many tourist flights to land simultaneously. The ongoing expansion is expected to eliminate that challenge, turning the airport into a more vibrant and accessible entry point to the South Coast.
