Ndindi Nyoro Dropped from Key Budget Committee in Major UDA Shake-up

The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has removed Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro from the influential Budget and Appropriations Committee, months after stripping him of his position as chair of the same committee.

This latest move marks a significant shift in his parliamentary responsibilities.

In the new changes announced by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Tuesday, Nyoro has been reassigned to the Committee on Diaspora Affairs and Migrant Workers.

The reshuffle was made official through a motion tabled by the Departmental Committees on Selection, which manages membership to House committees.

The motion stated: “Following the resolutions of the House made on March 5 and March 6, 2025, regarding committee appointments and in accordance with Standing Order 175, this House approves the following changes in committee memberships as detailed below.”

In this reshuffle, Nyoro takes over from Sankaire Leah Sopiato in the Diaspora Affairs and Migrant Workers Committee.

Meanwhile, Mathioya MP Edwin Gishuk has been appointed to take over Nyoro’s previous role in the powerful Budget and Appropriations Committee, which plays a key role in determining how public funds are allocated and spent.

Although Speaker Wetang’ula did not provide specific reasons for the changes, the timing is notable. The reshuffle comes at a moment when Ndindi Nyoro has been increasingly outspoken and critical of certain policies under the Kenya Kwanza government, which is led by his own party, UDA.

In recent public statements, Nyoro condemned the government for allegedly using misleading explanations to justify recent increases in fuel prices.

He also criticized the government’s borrowing practices, singling out the Ksh44.8 billion Talanta Infrastructure Bond, issued through the Nairobi Securities Exchange to finance the Talanta Sports Complex for the 2027 AFCON Cup. According to Nyoro, this bond risks plunging the country deeper into long-term debt.

In addition to Nyoro’s reassignment, several other committee changes were made. Jane Njeri will now serve on the Committee on Powers and Privileges, replacing Bwire John Okano, while Ahmed Shakeel Shabir will take over from Oyo James Onyango.

The Public Petitions Committee also saw new appointments, with Karemba Eric Muchangi replacing Kagesi Kibai Ernest Ogesi, and Ntwiga Patrick Munene taking the spot of Mbai Nimrod Mbithuka.

Moreover, in the Public Accounts Committee, Mary Emase has replaced Geoffrey Ruku, who is now serving as the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service.

These sweeping changes suggest a strategic realignment within the party’s parliamentary leadership, possibly to sideline dissenting voices and reward loyalty ahead of key legislative sessions.
