How DCI Tracked Down Suspects Seen Throwing Man into Fire in Viral Video

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested two suspects linked to a horrifying case of mob justice in Nyamira County, where a man accused of stealing was brutally attacked and thrown into a fire.

The disturbing incident took place on Saturday, July 6, and shocked many Kenyans after a video of the act went viral online.

In a detailed statement released on Wednesday, July 30, DCI officials revealed that detectives from Nyamira North used advanced forensic analysis and investigative techniques to trace and capture the two suspects.

The individuals are currently in police custody and are undergoing legal processing as they await to be taken to court to face justice.

The widely circulated video showed the two men beating the alleged thief without mercy before throwing him into a fire.

The DCI described the footage as deeply distressing and condemned the brutal act. “The suspects were seen on viral video viciously attacking a man believed to be a thief, then dragging and tossing him into a burning fire,” the DCI stated.

The investigators emphasized that it was through careful forensic tracking that they managed to identify and apprehend the suspects.

“Our officers followed leads using forensic methods to track down the culprits, who are now being processed and will face charges soon,” the statement added.

The DCI strongly condemned the growing trend of mob justice, warning that such behavior is not only unlawful but also highly dangerous.

They urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands, no matter how serious the alleged crime.

“The National Police Service is deeply troubled by the increasing number of mob justice incidents across the country. These actions threaten public order and the rule of law,” the DCI cautioned.

Kenyans were reminded that if someone is suspected of committing a crime, they should be handed over to the authorities rather than being attacked by the public.

“Citizens are advised to let police and the justice system handle such matters. Taking part in mob violence is a serious crime that will be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” they warned.

In Kenya, engaging in mob justice is treated as a criminal offense. If someone dies as a result, the individuals involved can be charged with murder, which carries a penalty of life imprisonment.

Even if no death occurs, suspects can still face charges such as assault or conspiracy to commit violence—offenses that attract prison terms of up to 14 years.

The DCI emphasized that mob justice is not a solution and only leads to further suffering and injustice. The public was urged to report crimes to the police and allow due process to take its course.
