Kenyan Reggae Star MC Fullstop Dies After Long Illness

Popular Kenyan reggae and dancehall hypeman, MC Fullstop, whose real name was John Maina, has sadly passed away following a long and painful battle with tuberculosis (TB).

MC Fullstop died on Friday, August 1, leaving behind a deep void in the reggae music community. Known for his powerful voice, energetic stage presence, and unique hype skills, MC Fullstop was a well-loved figure in the Kenyan entertainment scene.

His career began in the early 1990s and spanned nearly 30 years, making him one of the most influential voices in reggae and dancehall music across East Africa.

He rose to fame during the 2000s, with his reggae mixes becoming incredibly popular. Whether at clubs, events, or on music players, MC Fullstop’s mixes and hype were a common sound among reggae lovers.

His influence extended far and wide, as he traveled around East Africa, performing and hosting major events that attracted thousands of fans.

Apart from his live performances, MC Fullstop also became a household name on television and radio. He co-hosted the popular reggae show Riddim Vybz on K24 TV and Reggae Boyz on NRG Radio, where his signature voice and deep love for music captured audiences weekly.

However, behind the scenes, the music icon was quietly fighting for his life. In 2021, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, which eventually caused his left lung to completely collapse. In a public statement, he explained that unlike the liver, which has the ability to regenerate, the lungs cannot heal themselves.

As a result, he had to make significant changes to his lifestyle to survive with only one functioning lung.

In 2022, his health worsened when the TB spread to his throat. This further affected his ability to speak, walk, and even run — activities that were once part of his daily life as a performer.

Due to these severe health challenges, he openly shared his plans to retire from the entertainment industry, a decision that broke the hearts of many fans who had supported him throughout his career.

Despite undergoing several treatments and receiving overwhelming support from his fans, fellow artists, and the broader reggae community, MC Fullstop’s condition continued to deteriorate. Sadly, his long battle with tuberculosis eventually led to his death.

His passing has triggered an outpouring of grief among fans, entertainers, and public figures across the country. Many have taken to social media and news platforms to pay tribute to the reggae icon.

“Mourning the loss of a true Kenyan legend today. MC Fullstop,” said veteran radio host Maina Kageni.

“Rest in peace to the greatest MC Kenya has ever seen,” wrote media personality and fellow hypeman Azeezah Hashim.

“Farewell to MC Fullstop, the master of the microphone. We will deeply miss you,” shared Phillip Etale, Communications Director of the ODM party.

MC Fullstop’s death is a huge loss not only to the reggae and dancehall world but also to the entire entertainment industry in Kenya.

He leaves behind a rich legacy of music, unforgettable performances, and a strong message about resilience in the face of illness. Fans will remember him for his unmatched energy, passion for reggae, and his unbreakable spirit.
