ODM Denies Governor Orengo’s Resignation Claims
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has come out strongly to deny rumours that Siaya Governor James Orengo has resigned from office. This follows several days of speculation and confusion about his current status as the head of Siaya County.
On Monday morning, a resignation letter started circulating widely on social media. The letter, which appeared to be official, claimed that Governor Orengo had formally stepped down and submitted his resignation to the Speaker of the Siaya County Assembly.
However, ODM has firmly dismissed the letter as false, calling on the public not to be misled by such misinformation.
“We want to make it clear that the letter going around is fake. Please ignore it and stay focused,” the party said in a short but clear statement shared with the public.
The letter in question, dated August 4, 2025, stated that Orengo was resigning with immediate effect due to personal health issues that needed urgent and full attention. It claimed that the decision to step down had been reached after serious discussions with his family and medical experts.
According to the document, Orengo had expressed deep appreciation to the people of Siaya, elected leaders, and county workers for their support during his time in office. He reportedly described his time as governor as the most honourable experience of his public career.
The letter also appeared to be officially signed and had been copied to key individuals, including the Deputy Governor, County Secretary, Clerk of the County Assembly, the Chairperson of the Council of Governors, and ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga.
Despite these details, ODM has made it clear that the letter is not authentic.
Meanwhile, concerns are growing in Siaya County about a possible leadership crisis. Both Governor Orengo and his Deputy, William Oduol, have come under increasing pressure from residents due to their alleged absence from county affairs.
One resident, Julius Oluoch, took the matter to higher authorities by filing a petition. He accused the governor and his deputy of failing to perform their constitutional duties, which he said has led to a serious breakdown of essential county services.
Oluoch claimed that Governor Orengo had not been seen in public for over a month, and that this absence has caused major delays, particularly the approval of the county’s 2025/2026 financial budget.
The situation has reportedly worsened due to the rocky relationship between Governor Orengo and Deputy Governor Oduol. Oduol has gone public with claims that he has been intentionally excluded from performing his official responsibilities.
So far, Governor Orengo has not commented or made any public appearance to clarify the situation. As a result, key county duties are now being handled by the Speaker of the County Assembly, George Okode.
Last week, in a significant county event, the County Chief of Staff, retired Colonel Cyrus Oguna, welcomed a delegation from the national government.
The team included Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru and Medical Services PS Dr. Ouma Oluga. The officials visited Siaya to discuss important development projects being undertaken by the military within the county.
As the leadership uncertainty continues, Siaya residents are left waiting for clear answers on the status and roles of their top county officials.
