Cleophas Malala Summoned by DCI Over Stadium Helicopter Incident

The Deputy Party Leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), Cleophas Malala, has been summoned by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following a controversial helicopter landing during school games.

Malala has been ordered to appear at the DCI offices in Kakamega on Friday, August 8, to explain why he chose to land a helicopter in the middle of a stadium while a national secondary school sports event was ongoing.

Western Region Police Commander Issa Muhamoud raised concerns that Malala’s helicopter landing at the Mumias Sports Complex posed a serious safety risk.

The incident occurred during the halftime break of a football match between Musingu High School and St. Joseph’s Kitale, reportedly causing alarm and panic among students, teachers, and spectators present at the venue.

Commander Muhamoud stressed that Malala must comply with the summons. He warned that both the pilot and the politician may face criminal charges if investigations prove they landed without proper authorization.

According to the police boss, the DCI is investigating several possible violations, including putting people’s lives in danger, trespassing on public property, and breaching aviation rules.

“I urge former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala to appear at the DCI offices by Friday and provide a statement as part of our ongoing investigation,” said Muhamoud.

He added that the pilot, the politician, and any other individuals involved in the incident will face legal consequences if found guilty of the unauthorized helicopter landing.

Eyewitnesses said the helicopter landed just as the teams were taking a halftime break, disrupting the match and startling many who were unaware of its arrival. The landing sparked widespread panic, with some fearing it was an emergency or a threat.

This is not the first time Malala has been summoned by the DCI. Back in May, he was called in for questioning over a chaotic political event that took place in Western Kenya. That incident involved violent clashes between local residents and police officers, leading to the seizure of three vehicles belonging to Malala.

At the time, police claimed Malala had prior knowledge of the political rally that led to the chaos but failed to inform authorities, which further escalated tensions. He was given a 72-hour deadline to report to the DCI and record a statement regarding his involvement.

Despite these recent developments, Cleophas Malala, who has positioned himself as a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration, has not yet issued a public response to the latest summons or the allegations surrounding the helicopter landing.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and more details will be released as the case progresses.
