President Ruto Nominates Duncan Oburu Ojwang as New KNCHR Chairperson

President William Ruto has officially nominated Duncan Oburu Ojwang to take up the position of Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).

The nomination was brought to public attention on Tuesday afternoon, after National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula read a formal notice during a parliamentary sitting. According to the Speaker, the President has put forward Ojwang’s name and is now seeking Parliament’s approval before the appointment can be made official.

“The President has nominated Duncan Oburu Ojwang for appointment as the Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, and the matter is now before the National Assembly for approval,” Parliament announced.

Speaker Wetang’ula also confirmed that he has forwarded Ojwang’s curriculum vitae, testimonials, and the report of the selection panel to the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs. This committee will now be responsible for carrying out the vetting and approval process.

“The Speaker, Moses Masika Wetang’ula, E.G.H., MP, has officially submitted all relevant documents — including the nominee’s credentials and the report from the selection panel — to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee for vetting,” Parliament added.

Should Parliament give the green light, Ojwang will take over the leadership of the KNCHR, where he will be tasked with offering strategic direction and oversight. His role will include ensuring that the commission effectively promotes and protects human rights in Kenya, which remains its core mandate.

This nomination comes just a day after President Ruto made two other high-profile nominations to the National Police Service Commission (NPSC).

On Monday, August 4, the President nominated Amani Yuda Komora to serve as the Chairperson of the NPSC and appointed Angeline Yiamiton Siparo as a member of the same commission.

A notice released by the government stated, “It is notified that His Excellency the President, in exercise of the powers granted by Article 250(2)(b) of the Constitution and following the procedures outlined in Section 9(5) of the National Police Service Commission Act (Chapter 85, Laws of Kenya), has nominated a Chairperson and one member to the National Police Service Commission.”

Speaker Wetang’ula, while confirming these nominations on Tuesday, said the names have now been handed over to the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security. The committee is expected to conduct approval hearings within the next 21 days as per parliamentary rules.

“With Parliament expected to go on recess on August 15, 2025, I strongly urge the committee to begin the approval hearings without delay,” the Speaker said.

He added that the committee will inform the nominees and the public about the date and venue for the hearings in due time.

These recent nominations reflect the President’s efforts to strengthen key commissions that play vital roles in promoting human rights and national security across the country.
