MCAs File Petition to Impeach Governor Months After Senate Save

Kericho MCAs Launch Fresh Bid to Impeach Governor Erick Mutai Months After Senate Saved Him

Members of the Kericho County Assembly have reignited efforts to impeach Governor Erick Mutai, just months after a previous attempt failed when the Senate cleared him of all charges. The new motion comes less than a year after the embattled county chief narrowly escaped removal from office.

In a formal letter dated August 6 and addressed to the County Assembly Clerk, Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony officially submitted the impeachment motion. The letter asked the clerk to receive the motion and begin the necessary procedures to initiate the governor’s removal.

“Attached are the documents for your attention and action: the proposed motion for the removal of Governor Dr. Erick Mutai through impeachment, evidence supporting the motion, and a list of members who have signed in support of it,” the letter read in part.

In the motion, MCA Rogony included all necessary attachments, such as detailed evidence backing the grounds for impeachment, the written motion itself, and the list of MCAs who have endorsed the process.

Handwritten notes from County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai confirmed that the motion complies with Standing Order No. 70, which outlines the correct procedure for impeaching a county governor.

The county clerk acknowledged receipt of the motion and referred it to the Assembly Business Committee, which is responsible for scheduling it for official tabling and debate.

This marks the second time the MCAs are making a formal attempt to remove Governor Mutai from office.

Interestingly, the motion comes just hours after media reports emerged alleging that Governor Mutai had held a secret night meeting on Tuesday with his County Executive Committee Members (CECs) and Chief Officers (COs).

During the meeting, which reportedly took place at a hotel in Awasi, Kisumu County, the governor is said to have pleaded with the county officials to stand by him in the face of the renewed impeachment effort.

However, it is alleged that the CECs and COs declined to support the governor, saying they would not defend him this time.

Reports further claimed that the officials had previously raised funds to help Governor Mutai navigate the earlier impeachment attempt, but they now accuse him of misusing the money.

During the first impeachment motion last year, 31 MCAs supported the move to oust the governor. However, the Senate eventually rescued him, with 34 senators voting to stop the impeachment process while only 10 supported it.

In that initial impeachment case, Governor Mutai faced serious accusations, including gross violations of the Constitution and other laws.

He was accused of misusing and wrongly allocating county funds, withdrawing county money without following the law, and being involved in or enabling the misappropriation of public funds collected within the county.

With this second impeachment attempt now underway, political tension is rising in Kericho County as residents and leaders await to see whether the governor will survive once again or be forced to step down.
