Ruto Confirms High-Level Meeting Between ODM and Kenya Kwanza MPs

President William Ruto has revealed that Members of Parliament from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will hold a high-level meeting on Monday, August 18.

The meeting will bring together lawmakers from the ruling coalition and the opposition party to discuss ways of strengthening their newly formed political partnership.

Speaking on Thursday, August 14, during a visit to Migori County, President Ruto said the talks would focus on the broad-based cooperation between his UDA party and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s ODM.

“We (ODM and Kenya Kwanza) have agreed to work together to build a nation that serves every Kenyan. Our goal is to develop policies that will help increase the country’s income and strengthen our economy,” Ruto said.

The President further explained that Monday’s meeting will bring together MPs from both sides to create strong frameworks for national unity and chart the way forward. “We have agreed that on Monday, we will meet to establish mechanisms that will unite the country and move it ahead,” he stated.

This gathering will be a follow-up to the creation of a five-member technical committee formed to implement the 10-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by UDA and ODM in March this year.

In July, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said the establishment of this committee was the missing step in pushing forward the agreed agenda.

The MoU outlines several key areas, including completing the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, protecting young Kenyans, and upholding the right to peaceful assembly — all major concerns raised by ODM during the negotiations.

“To fast-track the execution of the ten-point agenda, ODM has formed a technical team to work closely with our UDA counterparts in ensuring the agreement is implemented,” Sifuna said at the time.

Shortly after, President Ruto and Raila Odinga jointly appointed the committee members. They include political analyst Gabriel Oguda, who will serve alongside four other appointees.

The team will be chaired by former nominated Senator Agnes Zani and will also feature Fatuma Ibrahim, Kevin Kiarie, and political commentator Javas Bigambo.

In addition to the committee, a joint secretariat has been established, co-led by Executive Secretaries from both UDA and ODM. This secretariat will provide technical and logistical support to ensure the committee’s work runs smoothly.

According to the President, the committee will submit progress reports every two months to both him and Raila Odinga. Furthermore, quarterly briefings will be given to the joint Kenya Kwanza–ODM Parliamentary Group.

The committee’s work will conclude with a final comprehensive report, expected to be released publicly on March 7, 2026. This date will mark exactly one year since the MoU between President Ruto and Raila Odinga was signed.
