Breaking: Raphael Tuju Officially Resigns from Jubilee Party

Former Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju has officially announced his resignation from the Jubilee Party, which is headed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In a letter dated Tuesday, August 19, and addressed to the former Head of State, Tuju explained that the political environment in Kenya, and more specifically within the Jubilee Party, has significantly changed.

Because of this evolving situation, he feels there is no longer any meaningful contribution he can make to the party.

Tuju reflected on his political journey over the years, much of which he shared alongside Uhuru Kenyatta. He made it clear that even though he is stepping away from the party, he remains loyal to the former president and is open to working with him again in future political endeavors.

“This letter is to thank you and pay tribute to our political association that dates back to the time when I worked with you under President Kibaki to create the PNU outfit,” Tuju wrote in his resignation. “I still look forward to working with you in the future. However, at present, I see no more value that I can add to the Jubilee Party. I therefore tender my resignation. Please accept my best wishes for your well-being and for the party.”

Raphael Tuju served as the Jubilee Party Secretary-General from 2016 until 2022. He recalled how President Uhuru Kenyatta trusted him with that powerful position despite them belonging to different ethnic communities — a move Tuju said proved Uhuru’s strong commitments against tribal politics.

Tuju emphasized that his departure will open up opportunities for young people in Kenya who are eager to explore leadership in the political space and bring fresh ideas into the national dialogue.

Besides his role as Secretary-General, Tuju was also appointed by President Kenyatta in 2018 as a Cabinet Secretary without portfolio, a role he held until the end of Uhuru’s administration in 2022.

Tuju described his appointment as a bold move because it showed courage in going beyond ethnic boundaries. He praised Uhuru for trusting someone from the Luo community to hold such a key political position in a party largely anchored by the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities.

“We were courageous enough to dream and even be idealistic in the rough political arena of Kenya, believing that we could rise above tribal divisions,” Tuju stated. “I still believe strongly in those values, that we can connect as human beings beyond the usual tribal mindset of ‘us against them’.”

Tuju also urged Kenyans to continue pushing for the social and economic transformation of the country. He said Kenya has enormous potential which is often overlooked because of the current struggles citizens face.

“I hope that more Kenyans will understand that even in the middle of so much poverty and suffering, this country has huge potential,” he noted. “There must be a reason why the United Nations is gradually shifting more of its operations from New York to Nairobi. That does not happen unless a country shows real promise.”
