Tuju Explains Why He Left Uhuru’s Jubilee Party

Former Jubilee Party Secretary-General, Raphael Tuju, has opened up about his decision to quit the party and addressed whether he plans to run for political office in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

Speaking in an interview on NTV on Monday morning, Tuju said his departure from Jubilee was motivated by personal reasons, dismissing widespread speculation that it was connected to internal conflicts within the party.

“I left Jubilee for personal reasons. There are no hard feelings at all. I decided to leave so that I could freely express my own opinions without being questioned about whose interests I am representing,” he explained.

Tuju further noted that leaving the party has given him the freedom to voice his thoughts independently, without being bound by the positions of any political organization. “Now I can speak for myself.

Essentially, it is like stepping into a space of freedom, where I can share my views openly, just like I am doing here,” he added.

On Future Political Ambitions

When asked about the possibility of contesting for the Siaya gubernatorial seat in 2027, Tuju was clear that politics is not currently on his agenda.

“At this point, I am not considering running for any political office. I have private businesses that I manage, and over 100 families rely directly on these enterprises for their livelihoods. Any decision I make in politics would affect their lives, so I must be extremely careful,” he said.

Tuju emphasized that the problems facing Kenya today are more structural than political, suggesting that holding a political office would not automatically resolve them. “The challenges the country is dealing with are structural in nature rather than political.

Therefore, even if I were to become the governor of Siaya, I don’t think I could be more effective than the current governor unless these deeper issues are addressed,” he explained.

He also highlighted that any future decision to re-enter politics would need to be made together with his family. “Any choice regarding a return to politics would be a personal and family matter. It’s something that must have the full agreement of my family before I proceed,” Tuju added.

Formal Resignation from Jubilee

Tuju officially resigned from the Jubilee Party, which is led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, last Tuesday.

In a resignation letter addressed to the former president and dated August 19, Tuju stated that the rapidly changing political landscape in the country, as well as shifts within Jubilee itself, left him feeling that he could no longer make a meaningful contribution to the party.

Despite his resignation, Tuju reaffirmed his loyalty to Uhuru Kenyatta and expressed his willingness to collaborate with the former president on future political initiatives.

He reflected on the journey they have shared over the years, acknowledging the experiences and lessons gained during his time in the party.
