Police Respond After Goons Attack Businesses in Nairobi CBD

Police Clarify Nairobi CBD Attack Was Linked to Business Dispute

The National Police Service (NPS) has explained that an incident involving a group of suspected goons who attacked several businesses in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) over the weekend was not a case of widespread insecurity, but rather the result of a business-related dispute.

The incident happened on Friday, August 22, 2025, at Nanak House along Kimathi Street, where four businesses were reportedly targeted.

On Sunday, August 24, reports circulated suggesting that the attack was part of a larger revolt by criminals against traders in the CBD. However, police have dismissed this version of events.

In a statement released on Monday, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said that the situation had been thoroughly investigated by detectives, who discovered that the attacks were connected to an internal conflict of a civil nature, not political or security-related.

“The narrative being pushed that Nairobi CBD is experiencing a worrying wave of insecurity is misleading.

After carefully analysing the events at Nanak House, it has been established that the attack was deliberate but tied to a business disagreement already being handled in court,” Nyaga said.

The police emphasized that while the attack caused fear among business owners and raised concerns about safety in the city, it should not be mistaken for a sign of rising insecurity in the capital.

They insisted that the matter was isolated and should be viewed within the context of an ongoing commercial dispute between parties involved.

Authorities have also reassured the public that security within Nairobi’s CBD remains stable and that police officers continue to patrol and monitor the area to prevent such incidents from escalating.
