Super Metro Responds After Its Bus Was Torched by Angry Riders

Popular Nairobi matatu company, Super Metro, has finally spoken out after one of its buses was set on fire by angry boda boda riders along the Thika Superhighway. The unfortunate incident happened on Monday evening and has since raised tension among commuters and road users.

In a statement released on Tuesday morning, the Sacco expressed sadness over the death of a boda boda rider who lost his life in the accident involving their vehicle. The company said it regretted the loss of life and sent heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased rider.

How the Accident Happened

Super Metro explained in detail how the accident occurred. According to their account, the bus was travelling downhill near Juja when a tuk-tuk ahead of it suddenly changed lanes.

This forced a motorbike rider, who was overtaking at high speed, to swerve in an attempt to avoid hitting the tuk-tuk.

Unfortunately, in the process, the boda rider lost control, struck the pavement, and was fatally knocked down by the bus.

“Sadly, the rider fell and was severely injured. He passed away at the scene,” the company’s statement read in part.

Investigations Underway

The matatu Sacco assured the public that police investigations had already started. Super Metro pledged to fully cooperate with the authorities, saying it wanted the matter handled in a fair and transparent manner.

The company urged anyone seeking more information about the case to contact Juja Police Station, where the investigation is being handled.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased during this painful moment. As Super Metro, we remain committed to following all traffic regulations and supporting the ongoing investigations,” the Sacco added.

Bus Burnt Beyond Repair

After the accident, tension quickly escalated along the Thika Superhighway. Residents and boda boda riders, angered by the incident, turned rowdy.

They blocked the road, creating a heavy traffic jam, and later set the Super Metro bus on fire. The vehicle was burnt completely beyond repair as passengers had already alighted shortly after the crash.

Police officers rushed to the scene, removed the rider’s body, and took it to the mortuary for identification and post-mortem examination. The wreckage of the destroyed bus was later towed to Juja Police Station.

A Call for Calm

The incident has once again raised questions about road safety on major highways and the frequent confrontations that arise between motorists and boda boda riders. Authorities are expected to release more findings once the investigations are complete.
