United Opposition Appoints Ex-UN Chief Dr Mukhisa Kituyi to Key Role Ahead of 2027 Polls

The United Opposition has officially appointed Dr Mukhisa Kituyi, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), as its official Spokesperson and the Head of the Opposition Secretariat.

The announcement was made on Wednesday after a high-profile meeting held at the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka (SKM) Command Centre in Karen.

The session brought together top leaders of the coalition, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), and Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Also present were several influential figures who have played central roles in Kenya’s politics, such as former Cabinet Secretaries Justin Muturi, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa.

The meeting was described as a critical step in strengthening the unity of the Opposition as it positions itself to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.

In a joint statement issued after the deliberations, the coalition leaders confirmed Kituyi’s new responsibilities. “The United Opposition has appointed Dr Mukhisa Kituyi as their Spokesperson and the Head of the Opposition Secretariat,” the statement read.

The leaders explained that the meeting’s main focus was to evaluate the role of the Opposition in what they termed as “liberating the nation” from poor governance and restoring accountability.

The leaders added that Kituyi’s appointment is part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring that the coalition remains organized, visible, and able to communicate its agenda clearly to the public.

They stressed that their partnership is not just political but also a patriotic duty. “We are united in our responsibility to rescue our country. Together, we will put the nation back on track,” they said in their communique.

During the meeting, members of the coalition also encouraged each other to continue strengthening their individual parties on the ground, even as talks about forming a joint ticket for 2027 progress. The possibility of presenting a single strong candidate to face Ruto remains a central point of discussion among the leaders.

Dr Mukhisa Kituyi brings vast experience to the role. A seasoned politician, diplomat, and strategist, he represented Kimilili Constituency in Parliament from 1992 to 2007.

During President Mwai Kibaki’s administration, he served as Minister for Trade and Industry, where he was credited with advancing Kenya’s trade policies and industrial reforms.

He also held the position of Chief Executive Officer at the Kenya Institute of Governance, further solidifying his credentials as a reform-minded leader.

In 2013, Kituyi was appointed as the Secretary-General of UNCTAD, making him one of the highest-ranking Kenyans to serve in the United Nations system.

He held the post until 2021, when he stepped down after declaring his interest in the 2022 presidential race. Although he later withdrew from the contest, he publicly threw his support behind Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga.

Now, with his appointment to the United Opposition, Kituyi is expected to be the chief voice of the coalition and the main figure articulating its policies and positions.

He will also coordinate the activities of the coalition’s six member parties: the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), Wiper Party (WPF), and People’s Liberation Party (PLP), alongside the Democratic Action Party–Kenya led by Eugene Wamalwa, the Democratic Party under Justin Muturi, and the Jubilee Party, which is represented by chairman Torome Saitoti with strong backing from former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i.

Kituyi’s entry into the coalition has been described by insiders as a boost to the Opposition, given his international reputation, intellectual background, and vast political experience.

Supporters believe his voice will help the coalition sharpen its messaging, rally grassroots support, and present itself as a credible alternative government.
