Kenya Power Lists 11 Counties Set for Electricity Outages on Tuesday, September 9

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has announced that several parts of the country will experience electricity interruptions on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, as the company carries out important system maintenance.

In its official notice, KPLC explained that the scheduled power cuts are necessary to allow the technical team to conduct maintenance and upgrade works on the national grid.

According to the company, these efforts are aimed at improving the overall stability and reliability of electricity supply across different regions.

The utility provider said that at least 11 counties will be affected by the planned outage, with interruptions expected to last for up to nine hours starting from 8:00 a.m.

The company also extended an apology to its customers, acknowledging the inconvenience such maintenance work may cause to businesses and households.

Why the Maintenance Matters

The planned maintenance is part of KPLC’s regular upgrades, which help prevent unexpected blackouts, improve electricity supply, and support future power demand.

Such exercises ensure that households, businesses, schools, and hospitals have more reliable power in the long run.

Electricity Billing Concerns

Meanwhile, separate from the planned outage, KPLC has come under sharp criticism from customers over rising and, in some cases, questionable electricity bills.

Recently, a customer identified as Muganda Clay sparked online discussions after claiming he was billed KSh 224,117 for his two-bedroom house in August 2025. Clay alleged that this was not the first time such an issue occurred.

According to him, he had earlier reported a similar unexplained spike in April 2025, when he received a bill of over KSh 20,000, but the matter was never resolved.

He accused the company of continuously sending inflated bills each month despite his complaints, saying the figures were far above his normal consumption. His case has drawn sympathy and anger from other Kenyans, with many calling on KPLC to urgently address the matter and ensure transparency in billing.
