Gang Attacks Police Post and Officer’s House in Kakamega

Police in Kakamega County have arrested ten suspects linked to a violent attack on Emakale Police Post in Matungu Sub-County.

According to an official police report, the suspects were part of a group that stormed the police post, raided the home of a police officer, and went on to destroy important public documents as well as personal belongings inside the compound. The shocking incident left behind damage that officers described as both deliberate and meant to intimidate.

The arrests were made during a joint security operation carried out on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, by officers from Matungu Police Station working together with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Authorities said the operation was carefully coordinated to ensure all key suspects were rounded up.

The National Police Service has strongly condemned the attack, warning that acts of violence targeting police officers and government facilities will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

In a firm statement, the Service cautioned that anyone found interfering with officers while on duty or damaging government property will face strict and immediate legal action.

It urged members of the public to seek lawful ways of addressing their concerns rather than taking part in violent attacks that put lives at risk and undermine public order.

Currently, the ten suspects are being held in custody and are expected to be presented in court soon to face charges. Police say they are pursuing more leads to determine whether the suspects are linked to a larger criminal network that has been active in the region.

The incident comes amid growing concern over the rising influence of violent gangs in different parts of the country. Over the past few weeks, authorities have reported an increase in cases where gangs openly defy the law, attack officers, and cause panic among residents.

In the neighboring Butere area, tension flared on Monday when police officers on a security mission were attacked by a gang armed with blunt weapons and pangas. According to reports, the gang attempted to harm the officers, forcing police to fire several warning shots in the air.

The quick reaction by the officers scattered the attackers and prevented what could have turned into a deadly confrontation. Investigations are ongoing to track down the individuals behind the incident.

Meanwhile, over 370 kilometers away in Nairobi, criminal gangs have also been taking advantage of dark and poorly lit sections of the central business district (CBD) to mug and rob unsuspecting people.

Residents and workers in the city have raised concerns about their safety, especially at night when the gangs are most active.

In response, the Nairobi County Government on Monday announced a major crackdown targeting such criminal activities within the CBD.

The county government, working together with Kenya Power and the National Police Service, discovered and dismantled illegal power distribution stations that are believed to have been supporting gangs by supplying unauthorized electricity connections.

Officials said dismantling these unlawful networks was part of broader efforts to weaken the infrastructure that criminal groups rely on for their operations.

The latest incidents in Kakamega, Butere, and Nairobi highlight the growing challenge posed by organized gangs across the country.

Authorities have assured the public that they will intensify operations to restore peace and order while urging citizens to work closely with the police by sharing information that can help dismantle criminal networks.
