Eight police officers based at Maseno Police Station in Kisumu County have been arrested in connection with the puzzling disappearance of a 200 Series Toyota Land Cruiser.
Investigators say the officers are suspected of playing a role in the theft of the luxury vehicle, which mysteriously vanished from the police station’s yard after being impounded for safekeeping.
According to an official police report, the black Toyota Land Cruiser V8 was first found abandoned at Maseno Shopping Centre and was later towed to the station’s car park.
Officers were tasked with keeping the vehicle secure as investigations into its origins continued.
However, in a surprising twist, the car was later reported missing from the same police compound where it had been placed for safekeeping.
“The arrests followed detailed investigations into the theft of the Toyota Land Cruiser V8, which had been reported stolen from the Maseno Police Station parking yard on September 16, 2025,” part of the police statement read.
The report further explained that the vehicle was later recovered once again at Maseno Shopping Centre before being returned to the station, with official records showing that it had indeed been logged back into the car yard.
Despite being recovered for a second time, the car is said to have gone missing yet again under unclear circumstances. This raised serious concerns about possible collusion within the station, leading to the arrest of the eight officers.
The arrests were carried out on the evening of Monday, September 22, through a joint sting operation involving detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), County Criminal Investigation Officers (CCIO), and the Kisumu County Police Commander.
Authorities noted that this operation was coordinated between DCI Nairobi Headquarters and the regional team in Kisumu to ensure swift action.
“This case remains under active investigation by DCI Nairobi Headquarters in collaboration with the CCIO Kisumu. The officers are being held in custody as investigators work to uncover the exact circumstances that led to the disappearance of the vehicle,” the report further stated.
Currently, the eight police officers are being detained at Kisumu Central Police Station, where they are awaiting thorough interrogation and possible disciplinary action.
Officials said the suspects will continue to be questioned as detectives try to piece together how the vehicle, despite being recovered twice, kept disappearing from secure custody at the police station.
Police sources indicated that investigators are keen to establish whether the theft involved an internal conspiracy, given that officers in charge of the yard are directly responsible for the safekeeping of vehicles brought in for investigations.
Meanwhile, authorities have appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that might help shed light on the mysterious incident. “The public is urged to report any suspicious activity or information that could aid detectives in tracing the full chain of events surrounding this case,” police emphasized.
The disappearance of the Toyota Land Cruiser from police custody has sparked fresh concerns over accountability and integrity within the service, with the case now attracting close public attention as investigators work to unravel the truth.
