Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna Leaves Wiper, Defects to President Ruto’s UDA

Charles Ngusya Nguna, the Member of Parliament for Mwingi West, has officially left Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM-K) and joined President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Nguna made the move on Friday during a visit to State House, where he was received by the President and other leaders.

He first became MP in 2017 after winning the seat on a Democratic Party (DP) ticket, serving until 2022. In the August 2022 General Election, he was re-elected under the Wiper Democratic Movement and has served in that capacity up to 2025 before announcing his defection.

On October 10, after a meeting held at State House with political leaders from the Lower Eastern region, President Ruto publicly commended Nguna for his decision to join the ruling party, saying the move would help accelerate development in Mwingi West.

“I want to thank Mwingi West MP Charles Ngusya Nguna for his courageous decision to join our team and help advance development projects in his constituency,” Ruto said.

Nguna also used the platform to rally his constituents, telling residents of Mwingi West to prepare for increased government activity and presidential visits in the coming weeks.

“Get ready! The next two weeks are going to be very busy with President William Ruto,” he said confidently.

Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua was among senior government officials who celebrated Nguna’s switch, welcoming him into the Kenya Kwanza fold.

“The President has also welcomed Hon. Charles Ngusya Nguna (CNN), a legislator elected on a Wiper ticket, who has chosen to abandon the politics of stagnation and embrace politics of growth and development,” Mutua said.

He added that the people of Ukambani stand to benefit more under President Ruto’s leadership style, which he described as inclusive and focused on economic empowerment, rather than old divisive politics.

“We are encouraged because the lives of Ukambani residents will improve under President Ruto’s philosophy of inclusion, empowerment, and progress, unlike the outdated rhetoric built on division and insults,” he remarked.

Gideon Moi’s Recent Move Adds to Political Realignments

Nguna’s defection comes just days after KANU chairman Gideon Moi opted out of the Baringo Senatorial by-election.

Moi, who previously served as Baringo Senator, had declared interest in reclaiming the seat but withdrew his bid a week later, on Thursday. His exit from the race was confirmed by KANU Secretary General George Wainaina, who announced that the party would not field a candidate.

This decision is widely viewed as giving President Ruto’s UDA a clear path in the by-election, further signaling emerging political cooperation and realignment ahead of future contests.
