Raila’s Loyal Bodyguard Maurice Ogeta to Be Offered Government Job

President William Ruto has revealed that the government will give a state position to Maurice Ogeta, the long-serving bodyguard of the late opposition leader Raila Odinga. The head of state said the move is meant to honour Ogeta’s loyalty, dedication, and years of unwavering service to Raila.

Ruto made the announcement during Raila’s funeral service held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University in Bondo. He commended Ogeta and other members of Raila’s security detail, saying they had stood by the veteran politician through countless political battles.

“I must appreciate his security people, and especially Maurice Ogeta, for always standing with Raila,” Ruto said, reminiscing on their earlier years. “Back in our ODM days, Maurice would even wipe our shoes when we arrived late for rallies.”

The President assured that the state would protect the welfare of those who were close to Raila, stressing that their contribution to his political journey could not be ignored. “Maurice, as this government works to preserve Raila’s legacy, I also want you to know that we will take care of you and everyone who safeguarded him,” he added.

The announcement was warmly welcomed by mourners, who viewed it as a noble gesture of respect to Raila’s longtime aides. For many, it was a recognition of the people who silently supported one of Kenya’s most influential political figures until his final days.

Raila’s elder brother also revealed that Ogeta was not just a security aide but also a nephew to Raila, a relationship that deepened their bond and trust over the years.

Ogeta’s Final Moments With Raila

Maurice Ogeta was by Raila’s side in India during his final moments. When news of Raila’s death was confirmed, Ogeta was visibly heartbroken and had to be consoled by members of the Kenyan delegation sent to bring the body back home.

He was also seen struggling to contain his emotions during the public viewing in Parliament and later in Kisumu. Kenyans across the country acknowledged his consistency, loyalty, and calm presence throughout Raila’s political life.

Known for his composed nature and role as Raila’s final line of protection, Ogeta remained strong throughout the burial preparations. However, witnesses noted that grief repeatedly overwhelmed him as he mourned his mentor and guardian.

Ogeta’s Emotional Tribute

In his written tribute, Ogeta described Raila as more than just a boss. To him, Raila was a mentor, a father figure, and a comrade.

“Jakom, the commitment I made during my years of service to you, and the close bond we developed based on trust and near father-son loyalty, shaped who I am in leadership today,” he wrote.

“From the moment you appointed me as your Personal Aide almost 18 years ago, I have known no other African leader who matched your dedication to freedom and equality—except perhaps Nelson Mandela. To me, you remained the First Among Equals.”

Maurice Ogeta’s story is one of rare loyalty in politics. As the nation prepares to lay Raila to rest, many Kenyans agree that honouring Ogeta is not just a reward—it is a tribute to the values Raila embodied: loyalty, service, and brotherhood.
