Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rains Across Several Regions Starting This Week

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert warning citizens across different parts of the country to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall expected to begin on Tuesday, October 21, and continue until Monday next week.

In its latest weekly forecast released on Tuesday, the department indicated that intense rainfall will affect several regions including the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, the South-eastern Lowlands, and the Rift Valley.

According to Kenya Met, counties in the Central Highlands expected to experience rainfall include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

Residents in these areas should expect frequent showers and occasional heavy downpours during the forecast period.

In the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley, the rainfall is projected to spread across counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Nandi.

Other parts of the Rift Valley that are likely to receive similar weather patterns include Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

For the South-eastern Lowlands, the department noted that counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, along with inland parts of Tana River County, will experience moderate to heavy rainfall.

Kenya Met advised residents in these regions to remain vigilant and prepare for possible flooding, especially in low-lying areas and near riverbanks.

“Isolated heavy rainfall events may occur over some parts of these regions. Residents are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions,” the advisory read in part.

The warning comes at a time when some regions of the country are still experiencing hot and dry weather conditions, particularly parts of the Rift Valley, the Central Highlands, and the South-eastern Lowlands.

Kenya Met noted that this transition period may lead to fluctuating weather patterns across various counties.

Temperature Outlook

Apart from the rainfall advisory, the department also issued a temperature alert, indicating that some areas would experience soaring daytime temperatures above 30°C starting Tuesday, October 21. The Coastal, North-eastern, and North-western parts of the country are expected to be the most affected.

Counties likely to experience the heatwave include Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Tana River, Garissa, Isiolo, and Mandera.

Kenya Met warned that prolonged exposure to high temperatures could cause heat-related health risks and advised residents to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day.

Meanwhile, night-time temperatures are expected to drop significantly in the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro, with readings expected to fall below 10°C in some places.

The department advised residents in these cold areas to keep warm, especially during the night and early morning hours.

Kenya Met emphasized that the combination of heavy rains and high temperatures across various parts of the country could impact daily activities such as transport, farming, and outdoor work.

The agency encouraged the public to stay informed through official weather updates and take preventive measures to minimize the effects of the changing weather conditions.
