Five Suspects Overpower Police Officers and Escape from Custody in Samburu
Police in Samburu County have launched an intense manhunt after five suspects escaped from the Wamba Police Station on the night of Wednesday, November 5, 2025. The dramatic incident occurred at around 8:40 p.m., shocking both officers and residents in the area.
According to a police report released on November 6, the daring escape began when one of the inmates raised an alarm, claiming that a fellow remandee had collapsed inside the cell. The cell was holding five suspects at the time.
Acting quickly, the officer on duty at the report office rushed to check on the situation. However, as soon as he opened the cell door, the suspects forcefully pushed it from inside, overpowering him and knocking him to the ground before fleeing in different directions under the cover of darkness.
The officer who was attacked sustained injuries on the right side of his hand, head, and knee during the scuffle. Another officer, who was on his way to return his firearm to the armoury, heard the loud commotion and responded immediately.
In an attempt to stop the escape, he fired two shots from his AK-47 rifle, but the suspects had already managed to run away.
Reports show that the escaped remandees were facing serious criminal charges, including robbery with violence and illegal possession of ammunition. Police say a multi-agency team has now been deployed to track down and arrest the fugitives.
“We have launched a thorough operation and are working closely with other security agencies to ensure these suspects are captured. We urge members of the public to share any information that may help in locating them,” read part of the police statement.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about security lapses in police stations across the country. In recent months, several jailbreaks have been reported in different parts of Kenya, sparking debates on whether police facilities have adequate surveillance and manpower to prevent such occurrences.
In a similar case reported in August 2024, thirteen suspects—among them notorious criminals and alleged serial killers—escaped from custody at Gigiri Police Station in Nairobi.
Following that incident, five police officers were arrested and later charged in court over possible negligence and involvement in the escape. They were released on bond as investigations into their conduct continued.
The Wamba incident now adds to the growing list of jailbreaks that have shaken public confidence in the country’s security systems. Police say efforts are ongoing to ensure that all escapees are recaptured and returned to custody to face justice.
