Businesses Suffer Losses as Sakaja Launches Major Billboard Crackdown

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration has announced a new, rigorous crackdown aimed at eliminating illegal billboards across the city.

In an official statement on Sunday, November 16, the governor confirmed that the Urban Development and Planning Department would spearhead the large-scale operation targeting approximately 100 billboards that have been erected without proper authorization.

The move comes after a series of recent actions by the county, which saw 20 billboards removed along major roads and key locations on Saturday, including Langata Road, Mombasa Road, and the Nyayo Stadium Roundabout.

Patrick Analo Akivaga, Chief Officer of the Urban Development and Planning Department, emphasized that any company found responsible for erecting or maintaining illegal billboards will face strict penalties, including fines of up to Ksh2 million.

“We have so far removed 20 unlawful billboards, but our target is around 100 across the city,” Analo said. “Any company involved in illegal advertising structures will be heavily fined.”

He further explained that some advertising companies have already felt the consequences, particularly those whose billboards were not properly licensed or for which fees had not been paid.

This crackdown serves as a stern warning to all businesses operating in violation of the city’s regulations.

Analo pointed out that certain areas of Nairobi have been particularly problematic, naming James Gichuru Road, Mombasa Road, Lang’ata Road, and various roundabouts as hotspots for illegal billboard activity.

“This operation sends a clear message that compliance with the law is not optional,” Analo stated. “Any company that has not fulfilled the necessary legal requirements should act immediately to avoid facing similar penalties.”

Governor Sakaja’s administration has pledged to continue the crackdown until all unlawful outdoor advertising structures are removed and full compliance is achieved across Nairobi.

“This initiative is part of Governor Sakaja’s broader commitment to creating an organized, orderly city that benefits all Nairobians,” Analo said.

In recent weeks, there has been growing public pressure on the county government to act against the unchecked proliferation of illegal billboards, particularly in affluent areas like Kilimani, where such structures have become increasingly common.

The ongoing campaign underscores the county’s determination to restore order and ensure that all outdoor advertising adheres to legal standards.
