A woman captured in a widely circulated video assaulting two female traders with a wooden rod at Kibuye Market in Kisumu on November 17 has been arrested, bringing new attention to growing tensions linked to leadership wrangles within the busy market.

Police in Kisumu described the incident as a grave criminal attack, noting that it may be connected to ongoing disputes among individuals claiming leadership roles in the marketplace.

The arrest came after intense public anger and calls for justice once the disturbing video spread across social media.

According to a police report recorded at Kondele Police Station, the violent confrontation happened around 4pm while the two traders were attending a chama meeting beside their stalls.

The victims told officers that a group of about ten people confronted them during the meeting. They alleged that the current market chairlady was leading the group that stormed the area.

Shortly after the confrontation began, the group launched a brutal assault on the two women.

The chairlady, who was reportedly armed with a wooden rod, is seen in the video striking one of the victims repeatedly as she lay on the ground, unable to defend herself.

Both traders sustained several injuries. One woman suffered deep wounds on her face, back, arms and shoulders, while the second victim sustained injuries on her ribs, arms, back, and shoulders.

The two were rushed to Lumumba Sub-County Hospital, where they were treated and later discharged.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), together with Kondele Police, visited the scene soon after the report was filed, but the suspects had already escaped.

The video, however, provided crucial evidence that helped officers identify the main suspect.

Police confirmed that the woman seen leading the attack was arrested while attempting to hide within the market.

She was taken to Kisumu Railways Police Station, where she was booked. Investigators say she may face more charges once the probe is completed.

Meanwhile, the other individuals who participated in the assault are still on the run. Kondele Police have vowed to track them down, insisting that all those involved will face the full force of the law.

Authorities added that preparations for her arraignment are ongoing and that she will be presented in court to answer to the charges linked to the attack.
