ODM Leader Oburu Oginga Defends Broad-Based Government, Warns Against Party Division

Nairobi, Kenya – ODM Party leader Oburu Oginga has defended the party’s participation in the broad-based government led by President William Ruto, warning party members against attempts to divide ODM ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during a recent address, Oburu emphasized that ODM’s decision to join the government was made to benefit the party and its supporters, not for personal gain.

He reminded critics that the late Raila Odinga, ODM’s founding leader, had also engaged in broad-based arrangements for the good of the party.

“We are not going back to the opposition. ODM will remain in the government, and we will continue to negotiate from a position of strength,” Oburu said.

Oburu also defended ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, saying his public statements represent the official position of the party. He warned that attempts to remove senior party officials or sow division within ODM would not succeed.

“Those imagining they can break ODM … it will never happen. In my hands, ODM will not be divided,” he declared.

The ODM leader highlighted the party’s plan to negotiate seriously for a fair share of power in the government ahead of the 2027 elections.

He encouraged members to register as voters and strengthen the party, emphasizing that unity is key to influencing the country’s future political direction.

Oburu’s strong message comes amid rising internal tensions. Some ODM leaders have questioned the party’s role in the broad-based government, fearing it could dilute ODM’s identity and limit its influence in upcoming elections.

Despite these concerns, Oburu insists that party cohesion is essential to maintain leverage in national politics.

As ODM prepares for 2027, Oburu’s message is clear: the party will remain united, actively participate in the government, and negotiate for positions that reflect its strength and voter base.

The coming months are expected to test ODM’s unity as the party balances internal disagreements with its broader political strategy.
