Richest Company in Kenya That Makes Shs 1 Billion a Day

Kenya is home to numerous private and public companies that play a significant role in driving the country’s economy.

These businesses not only provide employment opportunities but also contribute substantially to national revenue, which in turn supports economic growth.

However, the amount of money a company earns largely depends on its resources, investments, and the sectors it operates in.

While some businesses generate modest profits, others achieve staggering revenue figures. In this article, Newshub.co.ke takes a closer look at the richest company in Kenya and breaks down how much it makes daily, monthly, and yearly.

Safaricom: Kenya’s Wealthiest Company

When discussing the richest company in Kenya, Safaricom stands at the top. It is followed by other major players such as East African Breweries, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), and even institutions like the United Nations and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

Safaricom’s dominance in revenue generation, both within Kenya and across East Africa, makes it the clear leader in wealth and influence.

Safaricom was launched in Kenya in 1997, and since then, it has grown into a powerhouse in telecommunications.

Today, the company employs over 4,500 staff members across various sectors, from network operations and customer service to finance and marketing. Its services, including mobile money platform M-Pesa, mobile data, and airtime sales, have made it an indispensable part of daily life for millions of Kenyans.

Who Owns Safaricom?

Safaricom’s ownership is shared between the Government of Kenya, which holds 35%, and the South African firm Vodacom, which also owns 35% of the company.

The remaining shares are held by private investors and listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, allowing the public to invest in one of Kenya’s most profitable enterprises.

How Much Does Safaricom Earn?

According to the Safaricom website, the company recorded a total revenue of KES 388.7 billion for the financial year ending March 31, 2025.

Breaking this down further, Safaricom makes about Shs 12,337 every second from its various services as millions of customers continue to use its mobile networks and M-Pesa platform.

This incredible revenue translates to roughly Shs 44.4 million per hour and approximately Shs 1.06 billion every single day, cementing Safaricom’s status as Kenya’s richest company. To put this into perspective, the daily earnings of Safaricom alone surpass the annual revenue of many smaller companies in the country.

Safaricom CEO’s Earnings

Being at the helm of such a profitable company comes with a high salary. Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom’s CEO, earns an annual income of Shs 88.89 million, which translates to around Shs 7.4 million per month.

This makes him one of the highest-paid executives in Kenya, reflecting both his leadership role and the company’s immense financial success.

Conclusion

Safaricom’s remarkable growth and consistent revenue generation demonstrate how strategic investments in telecommunications can make a company a national powerhouse.

From employing thousands of Kenyans to contributing billions to the economy every year, Safaricom remains a benchmark for business success in Kenya.

Its daily earnings of over Shs 1 billion are a testament to the company’s far-reaching influence and the crucial role it plays in shaping Kenya’s financial landscape.
