Chaos Erupts as Police Teargas Helmet-Wearing Gachagua During Narok Campaigns
Chaos broke out in Narok town on Monday, November 24, after Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua was caught in a dramatic confrontation with police officers who attempted to stop his campaign activities.
The tension began earlier in the day when reports circulated that a strong police presence had been deployed at key entry points into Narok. A roadblock had also been set up, seemingly to prevent Gachagua from accessing the town for his planned campaign rally.
Despite the heavy security and attempts to block his entry, Gachagua managed to slip into Narok town. He arrived wearing a black protective helmet, suggesting that he was already aware of the tense situation and expected possible clashes.
His supporters welcomed him with loud cheers, chanting anti-government slogans as he prepared to address them.
However, barely five minutes into his speech, officers fired teargas toward his gathering. A canister landed near Gachagua’s convoy, forcing him, his team, and residents to flee in panic as the thick smoke spread across the street.
The sudden chaos brought the rally to an abrupt halt, with the former Deputy President’s security forced to rush him to safety.
Gachagua had been pushing to make the most of the final day of campaigns ahead of the November 27 by-elections. His mission in Narok was to drum up support for Douglas Masikonde, an MCA aspirant aligned with his political faction.
The helmet he wore throughout the campaign trail became a notable symbol of the rising political tension, underscoring the lengths he felt he needed to go to protect himself while addressing residents.
The incident added another dramatic twist to the already heated political climate, as Gachagua’s supporters accused authorities of using intimidation tactics, while security officers maintained they were enforcing order in the town.
