From Car Rentals to iPhones: How Gen Z is Raising the Bar in Village Festivities This December

Villages across Kenya are witnessing a fresh and exciting way of celebrating the festive season. Unlike in the past, when holiday activities mainly involved simple family gatherings, traditional games, or travelling upcountry to attend Christmas church services, this year, a new trend is emerging—led by Gen Z.

For this generation, the festive season is no longer just about going home or participating in routine family functions. Instead, it has become a time to showcase personal style, impress others, and project an image of success, even if life in the city is very different.

Young people are increasingly using this period to make their village communities believe they have “made it.” From hiring flashy cars to arriving in style, flaunting the newest smartphones and gadgets, to wearing fashionable and trendy outfits, Gen Z is finding creative ways to show off and stand out.

Their goal is to make their festive celebrations memorable and noticeable, turning ordinary village gatherings into extraordinary events.

Social media plays a huge role in amplifying these celebrations. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook allow young people to document their experiences, share videos and photos, and inspire others with their unique ways of celebrating.

Through these platforms, even remote villages become trending spots during the holiday season, attracting attention and admiration from friends and followers online.

This shift in festive behaviour reflects broader changes in the aspirations and lifestyles of young people. While older generations focused more on traditional festivities, church attendance, and family-oriented events, Gen Z is blending these traditions with modern trends and technology.

The result is a festive season that is lively, colourful, interactive, and increasingly centred around self-expression and style.

The economic impact is also notable. Local businesses in villages are adjusting to meet the expectations of this younger generation during the holidays.

Vendors are now offering services such as luxury car rentals, high-speed internet for streaming events, and stylish party setups designed to cater to Gen Z’s tastes. This demonstrates how the festive season is evolving into both a time for celebration and a significant commercial opportunity.

As December progresses, it is evident that Gen Z is redefining the holiday experience in rural Kenya. By mixing technology, fashion, social media influence, and traditional village life, they are creating new standards for how the festive season is celebrated.

The result is a vibrant, modern, and highly engaging festive period that others are likely to emulate, signaling a clear generational shift in holiday culture across the country.
