Beryl Odinga’s Stepdaughter Passes Away Suddenly, Burial Arrangements Announced

As the Odinga family prepares to bid farewell to Raila Odinga’s sister, Beryl, tragedy has struck yet again with the sudden death of her stepdaughter, Adongo Ambala. Adongo, who was employed by the Kisumu County government, passed away unexpectedly, leaving the family in deep grief.

Her untimely death adds to the string of recent losses the family has endured, prompting Kenyans across the country to send condolences and prayers.

Beryl Odinga’s Burial Plans

The Odinga family confirmed that Beryl, who passed away on November 25, 2025, at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness, will be laid to rest on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.

The family, under the leadership of Raila Odinga Junior, announced the burial details and indicated that the plans were made with the approval of Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga. A memorial service in her honor will take place earlier on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at Consolata Shrine in Westlands.

Beryl was married to the late Otieno Ambala, former MP for Gem, who died in 1985. Her passing has left a deep void in the family and among the larger community who admired her strength and resilience.

Who Was Adongo Ambala?

Amid preparations to give Beryl a dignified farewell, the family faced further sorrow with the death of her stepdaughter, Adongo Ambala. According to an obituary published in a local daily, Adongo passed away on Friday, November 21, 2025.

The obituary read: “It is with profound sorrow and humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the sudden passing of Adongo Ambala.”

Adongo had been working with the Kisumu County government and was known for her dedication to public service. She was the daughter of the late Gem MP, Otieno Ambala, and her biological mother was Nancy Ambala.

Adongo was a devoted mother to three children: Iris Apiyo, Sophie Adongo, and Finn Okello. She was also the stepdaughter of the late Perez Ambala and the late Beryl Odinga.

Friends and family have been gathering daily at the family home in Chulaimbo, Kisumu, for prayers and to make funeral arrangements, reflecting the close-knit nature of the family and their community.

Adongo Ambala’s Burial Details

Adongo’s memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, December 4, 2025, at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Milimani, Kisumu, at midday.

This will be followed by an overnight vigil at the family home in Chulaimbo. Her burial will take place the following day, Friday, December 5, 2025, at the family home, just one day before Beryl’s funeral.

The news of Adongo’s death spread widely, with a Facebook influencer expressing heartbreak over the continuous losses in the Odinga family. “When will it stop?! Please, Lord,” the influencer wrote, capturing the sorrow felt by many.

Kenyans React to the Tragedy

The deaths have elicited an outpouring of sympathy from Kenyans on social media, with many expressing shock and offering prayers:

  • Nyakano Kobura: “Eeeiii yawa.”
  • Molly Akinyi: “Gosh, Adongo Ambala is no more.”
  • Roslyn Apollo: “When it rains, it pours.”
  • Adero Mwango Ocholler: “We are mourning double. These are family friends as we went with them to school. We continue to pray for the family. So sad.”
  • Joy Muyonga: “Pole sana to the family. Too heavy to bear.”
  • Jane Akinyi: “Lord, please have mercy on this family. We rebuke the spirit of death upon the Odingas and those related to them in Jesus’ name.”

Support from ODM Members

In the midst of grief, members of the ODM party gathered in large numbers at Lee Funeral Home to offer support to Beryl Odinga’s family. Among them, Winnie Odinga was reported to have comforted Beryl’s son, sharing words of encouragement and solidarity during this difficult period.

The recent losses underscore the heavy sorrow the Odinga family is enduring, coming back-to-back within just a few days.

As Kenyans continue to pray and send their condolences, the family remains focused on honoring their loved ones with dignified memorials and burials, reflecting the deep bonds and legacy of the Odinga family in the community.
