Residents of Vihiga County were left deeply shaken after a newborn baby was discovered abandoned in a pit latrine in Losengeli.
The infant had been left by an unknown person, and locals quickly gathered to find a way to save the child. Police officers also arrived at the scene to confirm what had happened, as more curious residents came to see what was going on.
Parents are normally expected to protect and care for their children, but in some cases people abandon their babies due to difficult or complicated situations. This appeared to be one of those heartbreaking cases.
Residents Join Efforts to Save the Baby
A moving video of the rescue mission spread widely on social media, capturing the attention of many online users.
The clip didn’t show the exact location, but it clearly displayed the stressful moment as residents worked to reach the baby.
A female police officer dressed in a green uniform stood a short distance away, watching calmly without interfering as the locals tried to help.
Six young men surrounded the pit latrine. One of them crouched down, actively involved in getting the baby out, while the others stood close, anxiously observing.
They had already dug through part of the latrine using a tool that could be seen behind them. Eventually, the man turned around carrying the baby inside a branded bag, which he placed on the ground near some plants.
Rescuers Protect Baby from the Crowd
The top of the bag had been tied with a blue rope, which another man carefully untied as the crowd tried to peek inside. Some people asked for water so they could clean their hands after the rescue. Seeing the baby brought many in the crowd to tears.
The man who had pulled the baby out got upset with people pushing to get close and asked them to move away to give the newborn space.
The child, who was warmly dressed and wearing a diaper, was not crying. This added to the emotional weight of the moment for many who had gathered there.
