Ex-CS Eliud Owalo Denies Claims He Was Fired Over Secret Dealings With Gachagua
Former Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), Eliud Owalo, has strongly denied claims that President William Ruto dismissed him from government for allegedly holding secret meetings with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking during an interview on Ramogi FM, Owalo described the allegations as false, misleading, and driven by political interests.
He made it clear that he has never met or worked with Gachagua secretly, especially after the Deputy President’s impeachment. According to Owalo, the claims are meant to damage his name and create unnecessary political tension.
The former CS explained that the last time he met Rigathi Gachagua was during an official Cabinet meeting, where he was also joined by former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi.
At that time, all three were still serving in government. He firmly stated that there have been no private or secret meetings beyond that.
“I was not dismissed for meeting Gachagua. I have not met him recently. The last time I met Gachagua and Linturi was during a Cabinet meeting,” Owalo clarified during the interview.
He added that if he ever decided to work with Gachagua or any other political leader in the future, he would do so openly and honestly, without hiding anything from the public.
Owalo further pointed to his political history to support his argument. He recalled his bold decision in 2019, when he publicly announced his support for President William Ruto at a time when such a move was unpopular in the Nyanza region.
According to him, that decision showed his willingness to stand by his beliefs openly, even when it came at a political cost.
“If I decide to work with Gachagua even now, I will come out openly and declare my position in public. I did the same thing in 2019 when I publicly declared my support for Ruto,” he said.
During the same interview, Owalo also dismissed claims that he is a political project of President Ruto.
He described himself as an independent-minded leader who is not controlled by anyone. He insisted that his political decisions are guided by personal conviction and courage, not political sponsorship.
“I am not Ruto’s project. Many people don’t know that I am a very brave person. If I were Ruto’s project, I would not have resigned. It is much easier to work with him while in government than when you are outside,” Owalo explained.
Owalo’s remarks come just days after he officially announced his resignation from his position as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency.
His resignation followed his declaration that he intends to run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
In his resignation statement, Owalo said that remaining in government would no longer be appropriate after announcing his presidential ambitions. He confirmed that his decision to step down took effect immediately.
“Following my declaration that I intend to run for the presidency in 2027, my position as Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency, is no longer tenable. I have therefore resigned with immediate effect,” he stated.
The former CS added that his decision was not rushed. He said it came after wide consultations, careful reflection, lessons learned from past experiences, and consideration of new challenges within the current political and operational environment.
According to Owalo, the move marks the beginning of a new political chapter as he prepares for the 2027 race.
